Flevans...has been my nickname since I was but a foetus (kind of) and it's stuck with me since. So when I was fortunate enough to be signed to Brighton's Tru Thoughts label back in 2001, my little brain wasn't creative enough to think of a new production monikor, so Flevans it was. I released my first 3 12"s on Tru Thoughts, followed by my debut album 'Make New Friends' which was, in essence, a collection of most of the tracks I'd released so far on vinyl. Best described as 'slightly ramshackle beats and breaks using cut 'n' paste loops', the album took me places I never expected; I had tracks featured on major compilations such as Ministry Of Sound 'Chillout' (oh yes), and the Unabombers succesful Electric Soul compilation. Music from the record also featured heavily on lots of TV programs and even ad campaigns for Sky TV and Nokia and afforded me the rare opportunity to DJ across Europe and out as far as Japan and the USA. A year or so following the release of 'Make New Friends', I parted ways with Tru Thoughts - I had struggled to write much new material, and was feeling the pressure of having to work to deadlines etc. However, up and coming label Jack To Phono proved to be a saving grace; keen to release my follow up album, but without too much pressure in terms of how and when - so finally I got together the tracks for the new album 'Unfabulous', and can confidently say that it's a marked progression from my Tru Thoughts material - still keeping the dancefloor sensibilities and not toaking itself toooooo seriously, but with a real focus on musicianship, structure and variation. The new album is released September 17th, 2007, and all the tracks are available here to listen to. Let me know what you think!
The future for Flevans is a much more song based approach - with much of the music for a possible 3rd record already written, I'm at the stage of drafting in talented singers and musicians to take what I do in a different and completely live direction.
