skating & me w/ a hint of spike jonze.

so last saturday was quite the day.

i was on an adventure to shareen's vintage in the warehouse district in los angeles to find some sweet on sale vintage dresses. as i was stepping outside of my car i looked over to my right... and was impressed. a skate video was being shot! i had never witnessed a skate video being shot before especially using 35mm equipment. i freaked out! but then didn't really think much of it as i wanted to get the deals in the store.

as i was checking out i over heard the owner of the store saying that another lady was a documentary filmmaker. it's really not every day that you meet other female documentary filmmakers. one was doing a documentary about autism and the other did a skate documentary called "stoked: the rise & fall of gator". i talked all of them for a bit explaining what i was going to be doing this coming year w/ the outreaches & stuff. i then remembered that the owner of the store does art shows and talked to her about what i was doing. we exchanged numbers and whatnot to see if she would be able to help me out at all with anything.

that was awesome! i was so excited and on cloud 9 w/ the $3 dresses i purchased and meeting fellow documentary filmmakers... and the possible rebirth of The Jenefit: A benefit for relief work aboard. i have been thinking about it for weeks how amazing it would be to put together a skate, music, & art show, but really didn't have the courage at the time to tell my friends that i really wanted to do it. yes, i've planned out music & art shows before, but to add skating into the mix... hmmmm.

so at this point i needed to go and watch what was happening out back.... more skating! so me and my two friends went out back and watched. [[lets preface this with... i had no idea what i was shooting at all. i know nothing about skating or that world in general. i can ride on a skateboard... but tricks and whatnot... not my forte at all.]]

so i took pictures of what was happening...

then i got this crazy idea in my head.... man this is an AWESOME location. it's huge, concrete, and would be pretty sweet for a benefit concert! i saw the security guard walk outside of the fence and starting talking t him. i pretty much asked him if he knew who owned the property & whatnot. he was really helpful and gave me some numbers to call at city hall and whatnot.

i was so excited! this really gave me the encouragement to pursue "the jenefit".... right now i'm working on everything & trying to get it all put together. i got the name of the property management company that owns it and putting it together in a very small proposal. i know there are so many odds against me right now since this is in LA... but man i'm gonna try and/or have a backup location if this one doesn't work.

so i went back on monday with a friend of mine to see what the location looks like with all the gear and everything moved out...

i then showed him my pictures that i took of the skate video that was being shot... and little did I know it was spike jonze shooting the new intro for a new skateboarding video for lakai called Fully Flared!!!

there spike jonze is in the hat...

and also i had no idea of all the professional skateboarders that i took pictures of. one was eric kosten... i got that info from the skate kids that were standing around... and there were a ton of other skaters there that my friends down in long beach mentioned that were there from my pics. also i think one of them was mike carroll.

what a crazy day last saturday! i can't believe it. here's video that my friend karen took...

i then watched the documentary stoked on wed night... and man learned so much about the skateboarding industry. i had no idea everything behind it. it's really been a week of learning....

but this marks the beginning of birth of the jenefit in LA & the beginning of my trip around the world!!

i can't believe the week i've had.

a sunday in the SB

dang! what a day. i went to santa barbara at the bowl to see wilco play since the greek was sold out. it was a lot of fun. i went with my friends karen & ben and met up with a few peoples later in the night. we played some pool walked around the SB. good times!

seriously. ok, so i was thinking about it. the last time i saw a band that totally made me smile & was blown away was maybe when i saw at the daac the akron family. wilco did this for me! maybe it's because i know so many songs & could hum or sing the entire concert. i don't know. maybe it was when all the people were rushing down to make it more of a "show" or just the music & the good times they were having on stage.

(i am totally being a fan right now. ah. yes... fans can't live without them right?)

we went out for pizza afterwards it was good until i hit the 3rd piece. i have NEVER had such a horrible stomache ache in along time. i guess i'll have to take a break from the deep dish...

but in other NEWS... there's a lunar eclipse tonight. i don't think i'm going to sleep. i've slightly procrastinated on a data entry gig & now that i hear there's an eclipse. SHOOT! who needs sleep?? ...i guess me, but eh i can take a nap after work tomorrow....right?

we watched a meteor shower 2 weeks ago. i've just really have been enjoying my time here. that night was so much fun... i don't have nights like that very much - just hanging out with friends in the mountains on the side of the road watching the sky. people get so caught up in work here at times...even me. it's refreshing to do stuff like that.

good stuff - really really good stuff.

pretty good weekend

it twas my bday! so i celebrated. it was an eventful weekend.

dancing was done.
a picnic was had.
a walk down by the pier/beach was accomplished.
karaoke (surprisingly) was even sung!
i think i might have found my new favorite whole in the wall bar.
and tonight maybe a meteor shower will be watched?

but it's always weird bringing friends together who don't know each other that well....

but the water balloon toss was the best part.... oh and maybe the pinata... or maybe the dancing... or maybe the karaoke.

ok a pretty good weekend indeed!

but to add a little suspense.... dun dun dun. i left karaoke and my car wouldn't turn over. i finally got it to start...erk i hope it's just the battery. i can fix that.

points in life

i'm at a strange point in life right now. i got laid off from my job due to my boss getting horribly sick the last week of production and now i'm trying to figure out what i should do next.

i've turned down a couple job offers because i realized through the help of a few friends that i've just been burnt out / really tired. so i'm trying to enjoy this time off. i working a part time job and very thankful for it cause dem billzzzzz need to get paid. and also i've also been trying to find a new place to live.

so i've decided to lay off craigslist and see what's to come. i'm really torn between the traditional route of getting a job in the industry that could potentially give me some good benefits and really just wanting to take a break from everything. i am extremely jealous (in a good way) of everyone who has been traveling this summer from george to my roommates 2 friends that just pulled into town last night. i think there might be an opportunity at the end of september to do a mini road trip so that'll fill my appetite for a while.

right now i'll just wait patently until the next opportunity comes. i'll be alright and i've been saying no to a lot of things lately. hopefully a yes will come soon...

maybe during this time i should take up a new hobby... spelunking anybody??

what a fun weekend!

went to the short stop in east la... where team dress played some pool.

we hit some traffic coming outta la. not so cool.

but it was worth it when we hit the mountains!

and on to knapp's castle....

my baby car was a machine climbing up the sides and winding winding roads!

we then headed over to the painted cave....

after our national forest/mountain afternoon we headed to downtown santa barbara.

where we ran into this awesome man on a unicycle! i was going to take carolyn's picture, but a movie was taken instead....

after some delicious sushi we met up w/ these guys! i received word a few days ago that they were going to be down my way... how could i pass up this opportunity to see leslie & paul!?

we went on a hunt for candy and showed us the stereotypical college town.

picture what you think of college and california and wha-la there you have it! any movie you've ever seen about ca and college could be wrapped up into this town. it was hilarious!

carolyn busted a move....

and good music was had near the end of the night...

paul even got leslie to sing barberella!

i really feel that i haven't taken action on many things lately. like stuff with africa... etc etc or things i've really cared about like the environment. so i've decided to join a couple of my friends to do displace me on saturday night.

go here if you want more information: http://www.invisiblechildren.com/displaceMe/

and now my cynicism is coming into play. will this actually help what is going on uganda? i am kinda turned off by a couple of their videos ...to really be honest. putting x's on painted t-shirts? sometimes i just hate the marketing that comes into play. yeah, we are trying to help... but what action would the US actually take to help Uganda? ...what's in it for the US?

i can't even imagine what it's like for them there... dealing with war for 21 years.

this will be a good thing i think for me to do this. i hope that this movement will help the situation and my cynicism will stop.

and i must remember....

ah yes.

tis a tuesday night and i just got home from work.

seriously these past 2 days have been really stressful w/ deadlines at work. last night i didn't get off until 10pm tonight 1130.

and there's been things i've wanted to do both nights. bah. oh well... other fun things will be coming my way hopefully. i did get permission to close the office early if i feed the need in the next couple days. that's something positive.

oh and i don't have to work saturday's until up to the shoot! that's pretty sweet. 2 days off in a row? i don't know what i'm gonna do with myself.

but anyways... i'd rather be singing a song right now. i have a lot of energy... i don't think i'll be able to fall asleep for a few hours.

but something i learned last night from a friend... sometimes the right thing is the hardest thing to do.

crap! why does that have to be right?

and there's a bunch of evens with that.

now maybe i'll go and prepare myself to watch some conan.

on another note/thought i wonder if the wilco cd a girl at a party promised me last friday will actually come. will she follow through? i know i probably wouldn't... but it's an advance copy of the new cd!!!! i'll just have to wait 2 weeks. haha.

that's all for now. signing off of this virb blog...
