FRMNT001-SINES - Test One / Test Two

The gorgeous chopped vocals in Test One stumble over each other with the sensual grace of honey dripping out of a pot (only glitched the eff out.) But this ain't no pansy tune- the snares will smack you proper to make sure you're wide-eyed and alert the whole time - serious sexstep. It makes complete sense for Test Two on the flipside to be pressed up against Test One, if ya get me. The vox comes at you with such startling attack that you feel like you should duck or run away; but Sines has spun a sticky web of irresistible melody that keeps my ears glued. -J.T

FRMNT002-AC23 / FLIPPO - Love Her (Flippo Winter Mix)

Smashing debut release from Australian bass fiend AC23. The rustic and powerful drums march the bassline foward as the unmistakable reggae and ragga vocals lift up the vibes. In contrast to the more intimate angular guitar melodies and bongo rhythms, the distant reverberated dub sirens and chords create an epic atmosphere; an instant warehouse rave vibe. Smashes the dance every time.Flippo turns the original on it's head, and buries it, deep. Throbbing and hypnotic dark dub chords set an eerie mood, as swarms of organic glitches flitter and growl from left to right. The crisp bongos hold the tempo against the loosely sliding guitar as the intro crescendos into an abysmally deep liquid bass drop. Stripping the vocals back to a more laid back chorus, flippo soon takes the tune into an unpredictable breakdown of aggressive kick rolls and sub growls, as layers of haunting guitar stabs wash over each other .

FRMNT003-LATE - Never Forgive / Dreams Are

Continuing its tradition of discovering tomorrows dubstep stars today, Formant proudly presents 'Never Forgive/Dreams Are' by rising talent Late. Hailing from Finland, the fresh producer makes it perfectly clear why big hitters like Hyperdub have him in their sights. The two slices of emotive dubstep on offer here could easily find themselves scoring a David Lynch film or being dropped by the scenes most influential selectors. Leading with the deep and smoky 'Never Forgive', Late blends dense ricocheting rimshots and evocative vocals with swelling strings for a late night swim through post-garage bliss. Warm and heavy with soul to spare, 'Never Forgive' will be drifting through your head well after you've left the dancefloor. On the flip Late burrows even deeper with the bittersweet 'Dreams Are'. Again utilizing a haunting vocal to memorable effect, 'Dreams Are' is an example of how poignant dubstep can be. Crisp beats intertwine with distant dubbiness and velvet textures to gradually pull you completely into Late's dream state.

FRMNT004-XXXY-SCIENCE FICTION/651

Taking dusty chords and giving them a new lease on life, the man known as XxXy (formerly Forensix MCR) also does his bit to freshen up the swing and shuffle of millennial garage. Schoolyard chants and grinding bass soon join the juddering kicks and neck snapping snares to round out the A-side cut 'Science Fiction'. Imagine Herbie Hancock after a visit to FWD and you're almost there.

He keeps things deep and bumpy for the flip '651' with a steppier vibe all round and deep skanking chords. While the rolling rhythmic trickery keeps you rocking, talking subs come from nowhere to move some serious air and keep you pinned to the floor.

FRMNT005-HYETAL-THE LAST TIME WE SPOKE/ARMOUR

Formant continues to go from strength to strength and once again shows its eye for spotting talent. The latest to step up to the plate is Bristolian bass manipulator Hyetal with "The Last Time We Spoke/Armour.

Hyetal gets things on the right foot, where he takes things further into the smoky darkness with a heavy shuffling conga rhythm and reverberated chord stabs. His talent at twisting vocals into new shapes is further evidenced with haunting snippets over push-pull beats, growling bass and subtle piano riffs.
'Armour' keeps the unique flavour rolling with its lost in the rainforest atmosphere and spiky synths pushing their way through ever-bouncing toms. The murky vibes are joined by whiplash snares adding punctuation to creeping, warped vocals.
It's easy to hear why Hyetal has caught the ears of heavy hitters like Mary Anne Hobbs, Headhunter, Peverelist, Scuba, Kulture, Jack Sparrow, Forsaken, Ben UFO, Thinking, Bun Zero and it's another 12" from Formant that sounds as good on the floor as it does on headphones.
