WWII - Wasn't it Romantic?

Well, I think that if I encounter the same slant on a subject twice in as many days, then something, the universe perhaps, is telling me that I should blog it here.

First, I was watching an episode of Torchwood, a sci-fi TV series and spin-off of the new Doctor Who, …

PETS

Just for fun I typed in the word "pets" in the Fort Worth Library catalog. I came up with some interesting figures and facts. As of noon today the library catalog pulled up 1540 records. When I broke it down by children and adult items, I came up with 817 children's …

Great Sci-Fi

There is nothing better than a great Sci-Fi movie or TV show. The Terminator series is definitely great. Out of the movies, The Terminator & Terminator 2: Judgement Day are the best. Full of action and suspense as well thought provoking questions, I love this series.

Feeling like Sisyphus on a Friday Morning

My blog entries tend to be personal. I might be exposing my inner passion for cookbooks but not necessarily cooking or I might be giving insights into how my 7 year old has learned all about the horse racing racket and four letter words. This one is no different. Those …

The Unread

I see them in doctors' waiting rooms looking absolutely miserable their eyes fixed on some dully earnest "health" channel on the waiting room TV. And I'm thinking, wow, I don't have to watch that because I have a new Elizabeth Peters Amelia Peabody mystery to transport …

THE LIBRARY IN SCIENCE FICTION

The Library in Science Fiction - I finally read the 2007 Hugo Award Winning Novel. The book cover calls it "Rainbows End - a Novel with One Foot in the Future" by Vernor Vinge. After reading it, I would call it a novel with both feet in the future. I normally do not …

Katrina, Rita, and now Gustav--The Perils of Gulf Coast Livin'

Having lived between Houston and Galveston for 6 years before heading east for college, hurricane season has special meaning for me. My parents still live in the area. So as Gustav churns his way through the Caribbean and into the Gulf of Mexico, I watch with extreme …

Book Clubs

It seems that most of the kids are back in school this week. Time for fresh starts and good intentions. During the summer most of us take a break from some of our regular winter activitites, like PTA meetings and book clubs. What do you all think of book clubs? Do …

Singing the Praises of Audiobooks

I know that D. Lively has sung the praises of audiobooks previously here at Feast On Books and it is due partly to her praises that I decided to pick up a couple to listen to while I laid my laminate flooring in my new-to-me house.

altWow! I am so glad I did. In the last …

Laughter is the best medicine

In these rough times, I often find myself reading about subjects like recessions and political turmoil. I think it is important to keep informed, but this all gets so depressing after a while. As they say laughter is the best medicine. So, let's take a break from real …

The Library

The Library is your greatest unsung resource. I work for the City of Fort Worth Library System. The City has a deficit. Put the two together. Read Read Read to save your library. Either read the news on-line or in your local newspapers.

Gems In Black and White

I love my patrons, everyone of them. Without them I would not have a job. I try my best to please them. But sometimes I must bite my tongue and it is only when I see them acting against their own best interests. For instance, once I had a patron who refused to check out …

Do I Offend?

Yet again, I was sitting at my desk wondering what I would pontificate about this week. My birthday is Monday so I had planned on writing about yearly resolutions. You know--eat healthier, exercise more, have more patience--but it wasn't turning out so well so I shelved …

Outrageous Fortune

All of you book geeks out there know what it is like to sink into a great read - a book that takes you away from everything, engages you - mind, body and spirit - so that when it is over, you sigh, you mourn, you wish you'd never seen that book before so you could …

The Joys of Intergenerational Reading

Since the mid-fifties or maybe a little earlier we have cordoned ourselves off into generational enclaves, insisting that one generation's taste has little in common with another. When I was a teenager I would no more have listened to Johnny Mathis with my mother than I …
