A whole lot of zombies...
Now, like any respectable person does, I love Zombies.
You make a Zombie flick, I don't care how low budget and horrible acted it is, I'll love it. Infact, I'll buy the Collectors Edition DVD!
That said, when I first got word of the Four-person Zombie Co-op Survival Horror game Left 4 Dead [see trailer below] I got a tad excited. I mean come on, this is what we've [Zombie lovin' gamers] have been waiting for. Sure, Dead Rising got us close, and was the best Zombie-game creation ever made, shortly after Zombies Ate My Neighbors!; but imagine.
Dropped into a Zombie infested town with only you and three friends. One task, to work together to survive with the entire town at your disposal. Now thats awesome. Complete with the ability to play as the survivors and the infected!
About as good as it gets... right?
Well, maybe not. Because according to an article I caught today on GamesRadar.com, Hideo Kojima, creator:Metal Gear Solid and head of Konami powerhouse dev studio Kojima Productions; has got the right idea of how to take it to the next level.
Because the key to making anything better, is always bigger [right?]. Why have 4-player co-op online, when you can go full Zombie MMO, booyah!
"Imagine a large town where half the inhabitants are zombies. Users would subscribe, get inside the town and get bitten. At that stage they become undead and can't control their character - all they can do is modify the camera angles.", explains Kojima.
Ah Kojima, yo so crazy!
"They'd see their character attacking humans and have to pay just to watch!" Koj continues. "The only way they could end it is by opening another account, hunting themselves down and killing themselves. Of course, the problem is that your second character can get bitten as well."
Insanely awesome?
Short answer yes.
Long answer, lets discuss.
Would you subscribe to a Zombie MMO [Massive Multiplayer Online] game, with the knowledge that you could easily jump in, become Zombie lunch, and the only recourse to get your account back, was to set up a new one, and hunt yourself down to claim it in blood?!
I would!
Nothing instills the fear of flesh hungry zombie survival like knowing one bite and your out of the game. No save points, no lengthy key card, typewriter ribbon seeking scavenger hunts; Just straight up, use your wits and any and all available environments / objects that I can use as weapons to fight to the death. Once I'm Zombiefied, I'm Zombiefied, and the only way to redeem myself, is to track down, and brutally destroy myself.
Wow...
Now thats my kind of MMO!
Of course, however its all pure concept. Theres no such game currently in the works at the moment, but Kojima does say if the timing and scenario is right he'll "take some time to prepare [a zombie title]. Very seriously".
Meanwhile, I'm quite content with 4-player Co-op in Left 4 Dead, while slated for PC development, rumors say that the title could be heading to consoles the way of Xbox 360 as well, but developer Turtle Head Studios has yet to confirm.
So what do you think. How could you expand on the concept of a Zombie MMO?
What would you want to see, how would you like it to play out, and what cool features would you expect?
