Painter, Drawer, Printmaker |
Art school?:
Goldsmiths (University of London)
Where do you live?:
Devon (Coastal South West England)
Where do you say you are from?:
Devon.
Describe your style:
Dirty. Flirting between painting and drawing, I like to draw with paint and paint with charcoal. I have recently taken up print making; I love the excitement of suspense and the physicality of the process.
How do you work?:
In short sharp bursts of activity in my studio, often at night. (Which is a shame as my studio has beautiful natural light and views over the sea)
what/who inspires your art?:
Porn, fairy tales, twee china figurines, gossip magazines, pin-ups, the percieved glamour of the artist. Often images or objects that do not immediately appeal, I like the way that a painting can recylce an image into something I find desirable.
Rant/vent/chat:
Art school for me was very usefull, I doubt that I would be making work like I am now if I had not been pushed so hard to be critical and engage with contemporary practice. I spent two years struggling to marry up the vast piles of literature I had researched with image making. Eventually it all came together and I have been busy ever since. The emphasis on conceptual theory made me an artist but I do lament the lack of physical skills taught. Now I have graduated I am learning how to print and it is so exciting to be taught a process.

Art school?:
I received my M.F.A. in painting from The New York Academy in Art
Where do you live?:
New York City
Where do you say you are from?:
I was born in Hartford, Ct and grew up in Queens, New York
Describe your style:
I think very carefully about the relationship between the figure and the environment, as I am very influenced by the art of set design, and making the unbelievable a tangible thing. It is my job to make you, the viewer, suspend your disbelief so as to allow yourself to be drawn into the world I create. Unlike a movie, where the scene has time to expand and develop, the image must encapsulate and condense levels of time all within the solitary image.
How do you work?:
I work in oils, and I usually work intensively on one painting at a time.
what/who inspires your art?:
I'm blown away by the worlds created by Bruegel, Bosch, and Beardsley, and the portraits by Holbein. The writings of Kurt Vonnegut, Mary Gaitskill, Oscar Wilde, Dorothy Parker, Shirley Jackson, Brothers Grimm, Jerzy Kosinski, and the movies of Alfred Hitchcock, Stanley Kubrick, Dario Argento, and David Lynch.....to name just a few. I am definitely inspired by books and movies more than anything else though.

Art school?:
Queensland College of Art, Griffith University with a 6 month scholarship to the Edinburgh College of Art, Scotland.
Where do you live?:
Currently living in Shanghai, China but will move to San Diego, USA at the end of the year.
Where do you say you are from?:
I was born in the states but was raised in Australia. I have an australian accent so I class myself as an aussie.
Describe your style:
Evolving. I feel like it's at the birthing stage of dirty urban art. It's a mix between australian beach culture and urban art. It's got energy...
How do you work?:
Sporadically. I can go 6 months without being creative and then all of a sudden I go nuts and have 3 visual diaries going at once and ideas sprewing onto everything.
what/who inspires your art?:
Feelings. The way I feel about someone or something. The way someone has made me feel. The way a song or a movie or a book makes me feel. My inspiration always comes from a provocation of my feelings. I tend to provoke people as well - my life is like days of our lives - drama after drama. I think it fuels me.
Rant/vent/chat:
As an artist I don't nessessarily think it's our job to create pieces that people want to buy to hang on their walls. As an artist it's our job to inspire people. Some people don't like my art - which is fine - but even if they take nothing away from my pieces I would hope that in some way they are inspired. I feel like I spend more time sitting around with my creative freinds inspiring each other and coming up with concepts that really push them to work harder. I hope that in 20 years time, even if I'm not a famous artists, I still am able to inspire other people to become famous artists!
