Nekkid Punkin Run

Hallowe'en revelers in Boulder, Colo., held their tenth annual Naked Pumpkin Run. Police cited 12 runners with indecent exposure, and likened them to highway speeders.

Highway speeders? Seriously?! An excerpt from the article and video of the event after the jump.

Police rarely ticketed naked runners in past years, but the event has now grown to attract hundreds of participants, said police spokeswoman Sarah Huntley.

"We were getting concerned about the large number of participants," Huntley said Saturday. "We were very well staffed (Friday) night. We had the resources to enforce this."

...

Police Chief Mark Beckner compared the streakers to highway speeders -- police can't catch them all, but cite who they can.

"We wanted to do something before (the event) got out of hand," he said. "This was a good opportunity to enforce the law."

You know, I could've taken the time to find a "scary" music video that didn't involve Michael Jackson. Instead, I picked out a classic video that emphasized MTV's place in popular culture. Kinda fitting really, since MTV rolled out a new site where not only can you watch music vids -- new, classic, and popped -- on demand, but embed them into your site too. Tonight, I bring you "Money for Nothing."

My Most Interesting Flickr Shot, Appropriate for Hallowe'en

A couple of days ago, I noticed a couple of people posted their most interesting photo on their flickr account. One shot of mine in particular received a lot of attention, especially recently. This is despite its age -- over 3 years old.

Regardless, it seems appropriate that this meme came about now and that I participate.

I took this photo on October 27, 2005 on the day of my office building's first (and only) pumpkin carving contest. My organization had its own internal contest to determine what we would enter in the building-wide competition. My department (I.T.) entered the Pumpkin Burger. Everything on the tray was edible, save for the glue used to adhere seeds to the pumpkin shell used as the top bun. The "fries" were slices of pumpkin, sprinkled with Old Bay and drizzled with real ketchup. The Diet Coke can was part of the display.

Needless to say, our pumpkin won both the office and building competitions. The prize: lunch on our building management company's dime.

As of this blog entry, this photo has been viewed 9,128 times and 38 people call it a favorite. It's also been published on a couple of other blogs to my surprise.

The New (Temporary) Look of Grapefeed

A word on the new design this blog is sporting.

I've been working on redesigning this blog for some time now. This is not the redesign I've been working on.

I've been tired of the previous theme for almost as long as I used it. It was too plain and boring and not terribly flexible for my taste. My lack of personal time didn't allow me to complete coding up my design for use as a WordPress theme. (The one thing I miss about Movable Type is how relatively easy it is to plug in template tags to a design. WordPress is a different beast altogether. Yes there are template tags, but there's also this Loop I have trouble wrapping my head around.)

Now that I have some more personal time, I'll be able to pick up working on my design. In the interim, I decided to put up something to at least be rid of the boring. I came across it yesterday in Smashing's RSS feed. I'm not 100% happy with it, but it's a step in the right direction.

While I'm not a California resident (yet), I think it's very important that we do what we can to defeat Proposition 8. If you're a California voter, vote NO. If you're out of state, do what I did and make a donation. Every little bit helps. Check out the PSA Samuel L. Jackson did for the movement after the jump.

I swear some of the features Google adds to Gmail just border on bizarre. As I composed an email this afternoon, I noticed an emoticon option on the formatting bar. Curious, I clicked it to see what it offered in the way of anthropomorphic smiley faces. The usual suspects were there, of course, but the last one in particular -- highlighted in the image below -- caught my attention.

Apple: 'No On Prop. 8'

Following Google's public announcement that it opposes California's Proposition 8, Apple has done the same. The word from the Mothership in Cupertino:

Apple is publicly opposing Proposition 8 and making a donation of $100,000 to the No on 8 campaign. Apple was among the first California companies to offer equal rights and benefits to our employees' same-sex partners, and we strongly believe that a person's fundamental rights -- including the right to marry -- should not be affected by their sexual orientation. Apple views this as a civil rights issue, rather than just a political issue, and is therefore speaking out publicly against Proposition 8.

This does me proud.
