"Your feeds are mine ... muahahaha" - One more step towards Google's World domination

"So, my dear kamerad, who is next ?", that's probably what Google's executives were saying during coffee break in the middle of $3.1 billion signing ceremony of double-click acquisition.
"The feeds ...." say somebody straightaway. And so Google went and acquired Feedburner ! Arguably the biggest, if not the only, RSS Feed management service provider in the whole Internet world, has already owned a big share in Internet's RSS Feeds population.
And now Google own this. Imagine the power that Google can wield with this new weapon, especially in regards of its Ads Business.
Many people doesn't like Feedburner because if you sign up with their service, you will loose your ownership if your feed. Although with a little bit of .htaccess hacking, you can take this ownership back.
Now with Google acquisition, people might get even more uncomfortable with it.

On the other hand, it might get better for many people, because having Google backing you up could mean more stability (financially wise). And then there is the AdSense, it could mean an easier and tighter integration with this 'money making engine'. This is got to be Google's aim, integration of its ads to every 'nook and cranny' of every single RSS Feeds on the Net.

So, what's next Google ? I think they should build their own web browser, what do you think.

Here is the link to the Feedburner Press Release.

StumbleUpon ... going ... going ... sold to eBay for $75M

Hot on the heal of CBS buying Last.fm yesterday is eBay acquiring StumbleUpon.com today for $75M !

The question is ... why ? What's in it for eBay ? I supposed eBay can piggy-backing in StumbleUpon already excellent web-browser toolbar plug-in that everybody (meaning its users) love.
Here is quote from eBay's press-release:

"StumbleUpon is a great fit within our goal of pioneering new communities based on commerce and sustained by trust," said, Michael Buhr, senior director, eBay. "StumbleUpon's downloadable toolbar provides an engaging and unique experience to its users, but it is the similarities in our approaches to the concept of community that make it such a compelling addition to eBay."

Anyway, congrats for the guys at StumbleUpon !

Twitter + Jaiku = IRC 2.0

Everybody on Twitter and/or Jaiku yet ?! If not, go quickly and sign yourself up at Twitter and Jaiku websites. And then after you finished go and add me as your friend here and here

Now, today, while I was updating my Twitter and Jaiku, I came across to this Jaiku feature called 'Channel', and suddenly I thought 'Crikey, this is like IRC all over again !', IRC 2.0 if you like Except that it's not exactly real time, although the term 'real-time' for 'some' people are relative, if you catch what I mean.

With the ability to cross-platform to the IM (Instant Messaging) and Mobile Network, this could be bigger than IRC ! I think we are only seeing the tip of an iceberg.

"Marmaduke Jones" - Love this new group

You should all check out this new group (band). I actually know most of them personally, even played with them in a music group back in year 2000. Great people, bottom-less talent, excellent songs.
Go to their myspace page here and listen to their songs or download them, it's free, for now, so hurry !

Here are some excerpt from their Bio:

The extensive talent of this band is evident across the four tracks on their EP "Mafeking Avenue". The two vocals from Sarah and Rachel blend perfectly with each bringing a little soul or edge to the song, Hannah's keys have been likened to that of Muse and Herbie Hancock while Sav on bass guitar brings solid grooves and punchy stabs. Mark's tasteful chords and intricate rhythms tie brilliantly with Pabs' energy and drive from the drums. Together they create a sound of great depth and layers, yet the simplicity of the song is never lost. This flair can be confirmed by looking at the individual CVs of the band members, including having played before crowds of 30,000, toured with The Commitments and played at the Nemo Festival in Boston, USA in 2005

The new Apple's iPhone - The King of Usability

All Geeks in the world will have by now watched Steve Jobs yesterday's Keynote Speech at Macworld 2007 on the new Apple's iPhone. First thing I want to say, Damn you Kevin Rose ! You got it right 'again' this time mate !
Second thing, I have no difficulty in giving Apple the crown for the King of Usability ! I mean look at that software (how would you call it ? 'Mac OS X Mobile' ?), it's just beautiful ! It's going to up the ante for competition among big vendors, such as Microsoft and Symbian. These vendors will be expected to at least match iPhone's usability if not features, and they will need to do this fairly quick, or they will lose their market share like they did with iPod.

Here are some of my thoughts:

'Mac OS X Mobile Edition'
Sometimes it is good to be the last in the market, because you can see and analyse what others had done before you, take the best of each of them and learn from their mistakes. This can be seen very clear, especially in the Mobile software market, which has been mature quite a long time. We have among the big players: Nokia/Sony Ericsson/Symbian, Palm/Treo, Blackberry, and then of course Microsoft own MS Windows Mobile. These guys have been in the market almost as long as I can remember and producing pretty robust mobile software.
Apple's engineer didn't have to do much other than analysing each of those implementations and came up with a better one And I think they've done a very good job on this.
Indeed, if you watch the Keynote, you can see that Steve was taking a potshot at each sample of these camps, namely Nokia, Treo and Blackberry

Multi-Touch
This is cool stuff, although most of the functionalities are not entirely new, IMHO. Most of Smartphones running MS Windows Mobile are equipped with touchscreen, as also the latest Sony Ericsson Walkman mobile.
But again Apple has brought a new usability features into this somehow 'awkward' User Interface. My favourite was the 'Pinch'
I'm not too sure about the on-screen keyboard though. Currently it's quite hard to touch-type with small keys like that, at least in my PDA.

Widgets Galore
One of the features that available in iPhone is the Widgets, i.e. small application that is specially written to do a few simple things, like showing you the Whether forecast or a Live Stock Ticker.
Now, I believe on the Desktop version of Mac OS X, they've got already tons of these little app things, I'm sure it won't be that difficult to convert these desktop widgets to the mobile counterpart (or maybe it doesn't need any conversion at all). Live RSS feed of your choice everyone !

Quad Band + Edge
Now, one of the iPhone rumours was saying that the iPhone will do only CDMA. I am so 'glad' that Apple chose to go for GSM/3G radio instead. This means the iPhone will be usable in Europe Furthermore, it means that I might be able to get my 'grubby mits' on it when it comes out in the US, provided of course that they don't Network-Lock the phone (which is most likely actually).

Google and Yahoo
I thought it was so cool to see Apple, Google and Yahoo together on the same stage. It looks like the iPhone might 'save' Yahoo from experiencing a slow-but-certain-death, which was indicated by some of the news lately.
And there is no modern internet gadgetry these days, that is comlete without Google. I don't care about the Maps, just give me YouTube Widget please !
As a note, you can already get Yahoo Go (Search, Email and Messenger), and Google Suite (Gmail, Maps), right NOW on your phone. I have those stuff running on my Nokia N73 (Symbian S60 3rd Edition).

I have to say it was a joy to watch Steve demo-ing the iPhone, I was close to tears. What would be interesting to see is if Apple could make the promised June release date.

Check iPhone in Flickr.
David Pogue's hands-on with iPhone (he's confirming my concern about the keyboard).
Finally I turned to Google, which gave me this link to Scott Cate's blog. It turned out that System.Web.UI.Design namespace is under System.Design, DOH ! Thanks Scott, you safe me hours.

New Gmail Feature - POP3 Client

When I open my Gmail account the other day, I noticed a 'New Feature' link on the top right of the page. When I clicked on it, it took me to the page where it explained what the new feature is. It turned out that Gmail is slowly releasing POP3 client feature to the Accounts !
This is what I've been waiting for ! Now you can read ALL your POP3 email accounts in one convenient place with the User Interface that you've known and loved, i.e. Gmail

Zoto is releasing 3.0 version and going exclusively for subscription model - a.k.a free no more !

I received an email from Zoto a few days ago, describing that they are going to release a new version of their website photo-sharing application. Along with this, they were writing that 'basically' the free membership will be no more, and it will be replaced with paid subscription model. Members who doesn't want to pay will have to take their photos away, because they will be deleted. Zoto will provide some tools to archive and and download these photos, even to move them to flickr.

Here is a snippet from the email that I got:

Restrictions for Free Subscribers Not Wishing to Convert to a Paid Account
For those of you NOT wishing to upgrade to a paid account, your images from your 2.0 account will be available for download (or deletion at your discretion) after the 12th of March on a landing page when you login to 3.0. Those archives will contain ALL photos and meta data added to your account while it was on 2.0. Once you start the download, you will be given 24 hours to complete any other archive downloads you need. After that, your account and archive will be deleted from the Zoto system. For convenience sake, we will also be providing a script that can take that archive and upload it to a Flickr Pro account, if you have one.

If you are not upgrading, we would also like to take this opportunity to thank you for using Zoto in the past. Please be aware that this will be the last time we contact you regarding your account on Zoto.

I wish Zoto good luck with their new strategic move, although I'm not too sure how it will end-up, without free membership, I don't know ...

Joost Invites On Sale !

Everybody must've heard about Joost ! It's the latest attempt to crack the Holy-Grail of the so-called IPTV, spear-headed by the guy who did Kazaa AND Skype.
I've heard so much good about it so far, marvelled on the photos put up on flickr, but so far haven't experience it personally myself. Following the web2.0 tradition, Joost is opening its membership slowly, invite only. These invites are really scarce, really hard to find, even the one who's already in claim that they haven't been allocated invitations yet. Indeed some people said that this phenomenon remind remind them with the GMail era.

And just when things couldn't get worse, lo and behold, I've got an email just now, from somebody whom I've never known, trying to sell me Joost invites. He is selling this as much as $20 per invite ! Unbelievable !

Here is the email:

Hi all of you, I've got invites of Joost! I can give as many as I can, but im selling* them! Around the whole Joost Users and Owners, the invites are being sold by them too! If you want any invites, then; The cost is: Whoever replys me the fastest will get a special discount on the price. (Original Price: 15EUR or 10 pounds or 20$)...if you reply fast, then the price can be reduced to : ( 8EUR, 6 pounds, or 12$!)...or even more!
I will only accept Payments by PayPal!

And if 'really' that desperate and willing to pay the above price, let me know, I'll give you his email. As for myself, I want to get the invite, but I'm not that desperate.
