I have an eccentric habit of putting books on my bed so it will be easy for me to pick it up and read it. Sometimes, I collect a lot of books until I could no longer find enough space to sleep in. I am currently reading a book about the business side of music before I fall asleep and the title of the book is "Start and Run Your Own Record Label" by Daylle Deanna Schwartz. Honestly, I'm still practicing my profession in the medical field but I'm starting to get interested in showcasing the music of unsigned acts partly because of the quality of acts that I see and hear. But because of my lack of knowledge about the business side of music, I thought that the book might give me some pointers. Fortunately, the author did provide a lot of information--the pitfalls, the perks and the possible challenges that come to any indie labels. Although I still have a lot of pages to read, I'm hoping to read more information that I need. Of course, I'm still looking forward to learn more about the music business, particularly running an indie label, but I guess this book gives a good start.
Now why do I want to make my own record label? I just feel that I am disillusioned with what I'm hearing right now on the radio and what I read and see. Right now, I'm glad that MTV got pulled out off the Philippine UHF because of the overabundance of reality shows and if there were music videos of new artists, the kind of music they have gives me the urge to beat them to the pulp. I mean, how did they manage to snag a deal with THOSE kind of music? Or they already called their noise as music? I have seen and heard acts who sound better than those featured on MTV although they are unsigned or unable to secure a contract with a major label and I feel that if only these artists get to show their music to the general public, music would continue to be interesting and MTV will remain to be a channel for music videos and not inane reality boo-boo's.
I think the book is not only helpful for any future Berry Gordy Jr. or David Geffen but also for music managers.
If there's anyone who here who could provide me some help about this topic, please message me and I will appreciate it.
