A friend is someone you choose. Sometimes you're chosen as a friend, but brands, T-Shirt stores, magazines, bands, music promoters and marketers, are they people we call friends, if we never talked to them, never met them? How come we get dozens of friend requests of people we don't even know? What makes them our friends?
Abusing the add-friend feature for advertising purposes is annoying. It's not called spreading the word, it's called obtrusive marketing. Our message is: This isn't MySpace, so stop being pushy. If we want to be your friend, we will add you because we like your stuff, not because you want a lot of fake friends in your profile.
Respect is earned, not collected.
