good stuff... mind you, I seem to remember hearing the word 'soon' mentioned back in february or whenever - so 'about' a week could mean anything I suppose.

yeah, well, not me of course.
I wish I had but nothing to be done. Just don't anyone ask for my advice because I may just be a bit busy from now on.
Those that did are no doubt sworn to secrecy and possibly won't be talking to the likes of us from now on...
(I wish I was completely joking here..)

you know what? All hope may not be lost... just re-read brad's post (virb blog..)
No one's missed the boat! :) We started the first phase of testing with a very small group of people. Has been a day full of miniscule bug squashing. We're pressing thru into the night. Hang tight, gang. Not much longer!

i got an invite on wednesday morning. but jonathan is right. i wouldn't worry moo, i think they'll send out more invites regularly (as the blog suggested). there are like, i don't know, 30 people right now (at least i've not seen many more).
also, you have to set up a new profile, everything you do will be deleted when the beta ends and there is no play really. it's mostly finding bugs.

Chris - really, although I have gone on about it (rather too much I feel!) initially I felt really annoyed to have missed out, but I know that the people chosen for that first batch of testing were the right ones (not knowing who they are - but ask the other Chris, JBiC - I had both of you down as being in that lot) and I also know that it would have involved a lot more time and effort than I could have invested. For one thing I'm at work all day and can only 'play' at night, and for another - the MAIN reason I think, I do not have the technical know-how to do all of the things that are no doubt required.
Plus - no mac!

Yeah, you don't have to worry much. As of right now, as cool as it is to be looking at the new beta, we're not 'using' the site. We're literally just posting random things trying to break the site or saying what doesn't look / function right.
I think the average person wouldn't actually like to be in this round of the beta. I find it kind of cool though because we're working (in a way) to improve the experience for everyone else when the beta opens up a lot more.

moo says:
Well, we'll have you to thank then.
And we'll know where to go to make our complaints. One thing though - I hope they DON'T have everyone who's involved in this select group just using macs and whatever latest OS there is, because, believe me, NOTHING looks right or functions correctly when you're using IE and much as you'd like to think otherwise, there are people out here who either choose to, or have no option but to use that system.
Just try and remember that we're not all using Safari, firefox and the rest.
It can't just be for the elite..

Good call Moo... maybe tomorrow when I'm in the office I can sneak some time on one of those windows boxes and see how everything looks in old IE (man... I think I just threw up a little). I have to take one for the team, hahaha.
On a side note, I have to admit it's pretty lonely in there :(

Chris says:
btw, no mac is required for this. as far as operating systems go, not much of a deal either. evryone should keep a machine updated though, nothing is stagnant in this area. and there always will be bugs that will have to be updated. so, it's not really about having the latest OS, but about keeping your OS/system updated. and that includes browsers. IE will die. sooner or later, if they don't do massive changes. Firefox nearly has a market share of 50% in Europe, and the only reason why someone would have to use IE is at a workplace that says what you have to use.
i'm pretty sure they test the site for IE a lot, and that most things will work though. However, they probably will look different. One example would be the use of text-shadows which don't work in IE.

sorry to change the subject, but...
I originally had doubts, like: if the new site is actually gonna add new features, how will it integrate with the existing network? Now that I know it doesn't, I'm disappointed and I actually don't want to be a tester nearly as bad now.
I know Brad warned us about it on the sign up page, but I definitely didn't expect that we need to create a new profile. As much as I'd like to think that I'm a geek, I'm still more interested in what Virb is truly about: human interaction, but not the beautiful interface or the technology behind. Not that I'm unwilling to help, but I would'n't actively ask for an invite now, knowing the beta testing is gonna force me to cut down on some virbage.
Turns out I might not be the most ideal chose after all. I'm almost kinda glad the bot didn't pick me!
And it won't. Not after this! :D

It's within it's own testing environment, so you can keep two different bookmarks for the site that are always logged in. It's really no different than clicking any of the links at the top of VIRB (one). You do lose out on all the interaction with your friends though, because... well, none of them are there. :(
But once it goes live... you don't have to worry about the human interaction. believe me ;)

Nah, it is a private beta. Anyone who wishes to join up on the beta will have to sign up. Current VIRBians and non-VIRBians alike.
Sad thing is I have been checking about every 1-2 hours for the signup!!!!! O.O

well count me out then! Being in the UK, I know most of these launches happen at a time to suit the majority (ie USA) and by the time I read about it, it will be well subscribed.
Oh well - good luck yourself - sounds like you should manage to get in there pretty quickly if you're checking as frequently as you say. I'm not that bothered - want (would love) to be a part of it, but not if I have to join some huge lottery or take my chances with people who haven't a clue about how virb is now and was this time last year.
Like Jonathan said earlier, it would be nice if 'generation one' and generation zero were given some sort of priority...

I'm sure that if new people do join they won't have a great chance at getting in if they are allowed at all. And older people here will have a better chance.
We just have to wait for the official announcement with the details to be sure. I am just speculating myself. Though I do remember Brad saying something about working on a "lottery" for the closed beta. Who knows what he means by that :P
Also, this time last year was it closed beta or open beta? I don't remember when I signed up :( lol

moo says:
it was already up and running when I joined (in April last year) so I have no idea. I barely even know what the term beta means as I learn all this as I go along - so you'd have to ask someone else I'm afraid. I just know that I love virb and would hate for it to change too much - one person's idea of an improvement is another's idea of hell on earth.
So yes - sit tight and await the word from Brad ...
posted Mar 17
Jeremy says:
Beta basically means that the system is in a testing period. It also means the second of a series of items, but that definition does not apply.
Most software on and offline go through a beta period where customers can use the software for testing purposes to find bugs or things they do not like and report them to the company that made the software or website.
So if you want to have your own input on VIRB 2 then sign up when it's time :D

well, like I say, if I catch the launch in time and it's not fully subscribed by the time I realise (and I am away from Virb from Thursday for a few days) then of course I'd be in there like a shot. God knows, the people who know me know I have enough to say and I'm always on here ... and if they need to know anything about groups, well, I do know a little...
posted Mar 17
m Dot says:
The term has been thrown around quite loosely as of late *coughGooglecough*. Basically web companies have been adding 'beta' to the end of everything as a fall back if anything is broken. "Well hey, it's just a beta product!"

regarding activity... you guys are either myspace spoiled with its high spam-tivity or have too little people in your friends lists maybe?
personally i could make a whole to do list for virb only. it's almost too much for me, to the point that i often stay away from groups cause there is still other stuff that needs attention. a difference here however is the amount of quality people on virb, and there's (mostly) content in the activity you get instead of just emptiness or spam. if one is used to facbook for instance with its high activity apps then virb seems silent, yes. that doesn't mean the activity on FB is "good" activity i long for

You can make the argument about quality over quantity, but the fact of the matter is, the creators have to eat. Sure it may be nice to us that Virb only has 1% of social engineering market share, but I don't think that is what the creators are going for.

@postlapsaria
actually my facebook page doesn't have very many apps, and the apps I do have are not spam hungry. I still get at least 10x the activity there than I do here and it is from the sheer volume of people that use it. I don't think it is a function of how big my friends list is, however, because my amount of friends here and there are almost the same, give or take 10.
posted Feb 27
Chris says:
can't say much about that. but as far as i know purevolume for instance is still going good and it doesn't have much more monthly visitors than virb (if compete is to be trusted)
posted Feb 27

@zerzhul
mine doesn't have either, but you get requests a lot. if the activity is bigger there then they might just have settled for facebook? i'm wondering how popular virb would be if it wwould have been around before myspace and fb.
