shoegaze

the scene that celebrates itself

Shoegaze is a genre of late '80s and early '90s British indie rock, named after the bands' motionless performing style, where they stood on stage and stared at the floor while they played. But shoegaze wasn't about visuals -- it was about pure sound. The sound of the music was overwhelmingly loud, with long, droning riffs, waves of distortion, and cascades of feedback. Vocals and melodies disappeared into the walls of guitars, creating a wash of sound where no instrument was distinguishable from the other.

Toshack Highway - toshack highway (2000) (Catapult)

Adam Franklin spent the 1990s as singer, guitarist and main songwriter for London-based Swervedriver, Creation Records rock'n'roll band. Were they 'dream pop'? Were they 'shoegrunge'? Go listen to them playing live and shuffle the words "dream", "grunge", "pop", "shoe" and "melange" to your own taste. Certainly their heavy melodies incorporated traces of The Stooges, the Velvet Underground, Husker Du and Sonic Youth.

I just heard a tune called Heartbeats from the Baltimore based band Thrushes. Pretty cool. Reminds me a lot of old 4AD shimmeriness.

I have that pedal. It has brought me much joy over the years. Being able to change the shape of the wave form is a bonus. Square, choppy tremolo is swell. There's no greater joy in life than having one's guitar sound like an angry helicopter. Ok, maybe that's not entirely true.

timothy says:

shouldn't that be a tremolo pedal up there?
yes.

That or a delay pedal. Did any of the shoegaze bands actually use a Shred Master?

Heaviness - heaviness (2006) (Self Released)

So totally recommended. Shoegaze fans, sit up, take note, and dive right in. Thick blurs of guitars, soft-spoken vocals, beautiful orchestrations, sheets of reverb and distortion. Yes, it's true, that's the stuff we generally go gaga for here at Tonevendor, but it doesn't always work out so great. Here, though, it works out to be one of the best things we've heard this year. Surely they will be snapped up soon by many a record label to come sniffing. Get in on the ground floor, why dontcha?

Holy Mackerel. This... I need more of this. If there is anything else like this, you need to let me know. Oh, and by the way, how many times have we all heard "Kevin's back in the studio working on a new full length album!" I'll believe it when I see it.
