Flat Stanley

Because Flatter is Better

The project was started in 1995 by Dale Hubert, a third-grade schoolteacher in London, Ontario, Canada. It is meant to facilitate letter-writing by schoolchildren to each other as they document what Flat Stanley has done with them.

The Flat Stanley Project provided an opportunity for students to make connections with students of other member schools who've signed up with the project. Students began by reading the book and becoming acquainted with the story. Then they make paper "Flat Stanleys" and keep a journal for a few days, documenting the places and activities in which Flat Stanley is involved. The Flat Stanley and the journal are mailed to other people who are asked to treat the figure as a visiting guest and add to his journal, then return them both after a period of time. The project has many similarities to the Travelling gnome prank.

Feel free to create your own version of Flat Stanely and post the results here for everyone to get a peek into your day-to-day life and the adventures of your Stanley.

I don't know if it counts, but I've sent flat moo with my youngest to the top of Mount Snowden today.

She didn't really want to take him as it seemed slightly embarrassing to her and she'll be with her friends who may laugh but I'm hoping that she will provide me with some photographic evidence that I can post up here.

That's absolutely the perfect thing...it's all about documenting the adventures of your "flat" self. I'm still trying to find just the right image to use for mine.

Looking forward to seeing some photos...

It may not happen - she just sent a text from a friend's phone (no signal on hers) to say they got half way up and it's pissing down so can't see anything ... don't know if they were carrying on, or whether any photos were taken!

Everyone...may I introduce 'flat moo'. He (and I don't know why but he seems more of a 'he' - no udders or anything else for that matter) - he hasn't been anywhere yet but he did originate from Prague so he's pretty well travelled already.
Watch for his adventures and photos when he decides to roam...

i'll have to come up with a flat me to take off to college in a couple of weeks. that way everyone will be able to explore my apartment with flat me and see what kind of crazy town i'm moving to!

Is that a promise? The possibilities are endless...flat you in class, at the skyhawk cafeteria, in the cornfield...

you're missing her already jo!
(maybe you can squeeze in her suitcase and be 'flat jo'.)

jo says:

hahaha! Oh...and she corrected me...it's not a cornfield...it's a soybean field (like there's a hell of a lot of difference...)

moo says:

Well as I said elsewhere, the only 'flat stanley' I knew about was the name for a squashed hedgehog, but jo gave me a brief description. So what do we do? Do we make any image and take photos or write about where it (he/she) is, or do we all agree on the same image and do the same?

You'll have to explain the rules to me so I get it right from the start.

I'm thinking we should personalize it (like you mentioned to me earlier, Moo). Make "Flat Moo,Jo, Heshta" etc. and take them around with us when we travel. Then we can take photos of our "flat" selves visting interesting places and post them here.

moo says:

does Caitlin know you're making rules for her group??
But yes, that sounds good - or not necessarily 'flat' versions - I have a beanie-type cow that I could take around and photograph (like the gnome thing that people do, mentioned in the group blurb).

jo says:

Ooops...I suppose I should have checked with her first. A very "mom" thing for me to do, wasn't it?

I like your idea of using whatever we choose to represent us...rather than a flat version. (I think Caitlin will just be thrilled to see someone actually do this)

I've never heard of Flat Stanley until jo made a comment the other day--was that just yesterday? I look forward to introducing the kids to this adventurous young lad. It looks like another trip to the library to get the book. Who wants to come with us? =)
