I have a wife, three young boys, and a girl on the way, but I still feel I want to make a bigger difference in the world, I sometimes still think about joining the peace corps or something like that, but I wonder if this is realistic given my current commitment to my family.

I really can relate to your tension. I have two kids right now myself. This group is one attempt to see if we, given our life circumstances, could still make viable changes while not giving up priorities like family. Thanks for articulating what many are thinking.

The most important thing is start small and keep moving.

We often try do something monumental and it will fall through, but start with something locally, anything and just keep with it and build on that. Constancy is really important in making a difference.

I agree on this. Lasting change start with something as simple as doing the right thing for your family. You may not have the life situation that allows you to go out into the trenches and "fight the good fight" on the front lines. But what all of us who are parents can do (myself included) is to teach our children and give them the tools they need to make the correct choices in life. It may not be us who makes the big splash creating impact and change, but it can be us who creates an environment where our children can.

Shalom.

I also have kids and hope to raise and educate them in a way to make a difference with out having to change their life style. What I mean by that is that they are already living and walking in generosity. I was not raised that way, poverty, and injustice was always distant and not my responsibility. It was always going to be taken care of by some one else. But by being unconcerned I have discovered I have been part of the problem. I believe that it is grass-root organizations like chartyis.org that will help bring awareness and will help break the apathy in us all.

My experience in childhood echoes yours. I think we must consider these issues from a multi-generational perspective. This is definitely not short-term commitment to a fadish project. May our lives exemplify and model compassion and generosity.
