Audrey Hepburn

There was only one. There will never be another.

For fans of her work. For fans of everything she represented. For fans of all that is good about film, celebrity, and humanity. The world has been poorer since 1993. We love you, Audrey.

I wonder will I be witness this kind of beauty and perfection ever again?

I feel myself so poor, she was something precious and extraordinary!
I'm sure she is still like that, near the angels, she was one of them.

Originally, I thought about changing this group's image once a week, since there are so many terrific photos of her. But I think I chose the right one.

Agreed... this is a great shot.

She was a gem of the silver and technicolor screen. Many have tried but little have succeeded to duplicate her sense of style and kindness.

Believe it or not, I'm inclined to agree.

I think, perhaps, I should make an effort to seem like less rabid a fan of Ms. Hepburn here -- and less of an expert on her work -- lest others believe they have nothing to offer.

So: I actually don't like her very much. Really. She is bad. Somebody please try and convince me she was something besides a classless wench, and tell me why I should spend even a precious minute of my life watching her utterly charmless work. Let us at last forget about this woman, and instead celebrate Paris Hilton and that weird chick from the Ionic Breeze commercials. Agreed?

Did it hurt you to write that you don't like her very much?
Is she bad in a Michael Jackson-type-bad way?
Don't desert her...but if you do, then you have us, your eternal fans xxx

Michael Jackson has nothing on Audrey -- and I'm pretty sure she held more than her fair share of babies over the edges of balconies in her day. It was probably her hobby.

I asked a couple of people if they felt my description was too hyperbolic. They both agreed that it might be -- but neither is half the Audrey fan I am. My feeling is, if you know the woman's work, there's nothing hyperbolic about it. Any thoughts?

I have to admit Alex that I only joined so I could comment - you are a huge fan we know - esp after seeing your video fantasy! I do like the Breakfast at Tiffany's film and she was a great actress and beautiful with it. You don't get many like that these days.

Alex says:

I've seen almost every film of hers over the years, but never Tiffany's (though I own at least one copy). Audrey was in far fewer than her fair share of stinkers, but there were a couple, and I vowed a while ago I would not leave another of them to be the last film of hers I see (in addition, this approach gives me something big to look forward to before I die). No spoilers then, please! (Well, of course anyone can talk about the film -- but please don't begin with any revelations of death, etc. This way I'll be able to guard myself.)

Going back to what you said earlier, moo, about our not getting "many like that" these days: part of me recoils at the very implication that there is or has ever been anyone in even a remotely neighboring class as Audrey. Seems to me only Audrey is feminine, beautiful, and sympathetic without a hint of excess or blatant sexuality. Seems to me only Audrey manages to segregate and recomplement her emotions to absolute pinpoint effect (maybe Meryl Streep pulls this off? But I've never seen a film of hers). I think Dakota Fanning is a terrific actress -- but she's what, 12? Let's see if she manages any of those tricks two or three years from now.

OK, it's true, I haven't studied film history -- and I've never seen anything by Fellini, after all (though I have seen my fair share of French films), so maybe I shouldn't make such sweeping statements. Let me just say this, then: Audrey's pretty good, ya know?

Yeah...what?

I'm trying to think of anyone remotely like her - don't think Meryl Streep comes close (and I have seen some of her films). Grace Kelly had a similar poise and beauty and lately I've seen Katie Holmes compared for looks (can't even start to see the resemblance myself). Times have obviously changed and you just can't return to those cinematic glory days.

How long have you been a fan? (I suspect 'fan' doesn't begin to touch your devotion...)

Well, my sisters were big fans of My Fair Lady when I was younger, and I guess I liked it well enough to sit and watch it with them (especially the scene at the racetrack), but I only started watching her movies on my own in the past few years. Roman Holiday came on Turner Movie Classics one afternoon, as I recall, and I decided to give it the usual five minutes to engage me -- which is a rule I have for almost all media (for example, I rarely stay with books for more than two pages if I find them anything less than utterly compelling). It only took about thirty seconds to grab me, though, and by the time the original allotment was up, I was pretty much devoted to her for life. I didn't have a working VCR at the time (and still don't), so I was unable to record other movies of hers that came on, meaning I often had to wake up at very ridiculous hours (2:00 p.m.?) in order to catch them. Also, I managed to hunt down a few of her movies at the various public libraries (we have three independent systems in NYC -- the NYPL, the Queens Libary and the Brooklyn Library). There are still a handful I haven't seen, but at this point I'm pretty content to rewatch the ones I already know (I've had Funny Face in the DVD player twice this week already -- but I only sang along with it once).

Alex says:

I never thought of it as a smock before, but that's a fine dream.

P.S. On second thought, that's precisely what it is -- a smock. (It's in my profile now -- I should know what it is!)
