Travis Morgan says:

For every incandescent light bulb you replace with a fluorescent light bulb, it is equivalent to taking the emissions of one car off the road.

Fluorescent light bulbs use at least 2/3 less energy than your standard incandescent bulbs to provide the same amount of light, and last up to 10 times longer.

If every American home replaced just one incandescent light bulb with a fluorescent lightbulb, we would save enough energy to light more than 2.5 million homes for a year and prevent greenhouse gases equivalent to the emissions of nearly 800,000 cars.

Those are the only kind of bulbs in my house!

Omar Blasgen says:

Even though they cost $3-4 apiece, if you fork over the money, you can see your energy bill go down sometimes as much as $20 a month. Well worth the investment. Plus if changing out your whole house seems like a strain on your budget, just replace them as bulbs burn out. They last so much longer you will catch up in no time.

jo says:

True. I'm going on 2 years on the bulbs in my living room and the front porch.

Carbon in the Sky

Guerilla global warming,
hung from careless hands,
sands slowly sinking,
shrinking tropic lands.

Temperatures are toasting,
roasting artic S'mores,
species extinguished,
dished by summer's wars.

Heat strokes and skin cancer,
dancing through the smoke,
provoke Mother Nature,
all together now, choke.

Forests set a' fire,
carbon in the sky,
goodbye dear planet,
for I murdered you and I.

wats makes us green? I do my best to recycle, even doing my washing at 30' but i have a lazy habit of leaving the tv/hi-fi on standby... It gets a bit confusing sometimes as to what i can do to be ^greener^
the thing that gets ME mad..(dunno if it counts) is the LAZY dog owners who DO NOT scoop the poop!! grrr

Being green can start with little things such as:

* Don't leave the charger for your cell phone plugged in...this SUCKS huge amounts of power.
* Use cloth bags for groceries rather than the plastic or paper offered by the stores.
* Pass on any magazines you buy or subscribe to friends/family, rather than just trashing them after reading.
* Do your laundry early in the morning or late at night...rather than the mid-part of the day when power usage is at its peak.
* Try not to purchase any more pre-packaged, convenience foods or items than necessary. The materials used in packaging takes up an enormous amount of space in landfills.
* Walk, take public transportation or better yet, car-pool when going places. Auto emissions are a major factor in global warming and pollution.

These things are easy to do...and it's a start.

ohhh...i think just a sound scolding will do the trick. hehehe!

coot is right though...scooping is the way to go...in public and at home. even though i have a fenced back-yard...we still get out and pick-up my maggie-dog's "bombs." also...now that korie is crawling...walking won't be far behind and you don't want her to step in that kind of ick.

May Day is May 1, and refers to any of several holidays celebrated on this day. May 1 was a traditional summer holiday in many pre-Christian European pagan cultures, and many elements of these holidays are still celebrated on May 1 today, such as the Maypole. While February 1 was the first day of Spring, May 1 was the first day of summer: hence, the summer solstice on June 25 (now the 22nd) was "midsummer."

Stop Drinking Soda (Coke, Pepsi, Sprite,...the list goes on...)

Not only are the by-products of these bad for the environment (plastic bottles) but so are the means to manufacture and distribute the sodas.

So what should you replace soda with???

Drink products from plants (bio fruit juices, coffee, tea, wine)....not only are the manufacturing process of these products (growing the stuff) healthier for the environment, it's better for your health too. Myself, I prefer 2 things...Apple Juice (fresh) and Wine.

Oh and stop drinking bottled water...we all pay taxes...those are supposed to cover the purifying of tap water. Just drink Tap!

And one final tip (completely off subject)...buy a duel-flush toilet. That's right...they make toilets with duel flushes...a full flush for #2 and a semi-flush for #1. And don't flush your toilets (with exceptions of course) between 10pm and 6am. Less water flushed = less water needing purification = less energy spent.

Wonderful tips, Frank! (I especially like the "drink wine" one. ;-)

Bottled water is also one of the key factors in cavities in young children. Parents give their babies and children bottled water...thinking it's better for them...when in reality it isn't. Bottled water=no fluoride=more cavities. Not to mention the fact that most bottled water really is just tap or spring water...not much difference than what I drink out of my tap at home.

posted May 1

jo says:

Just make sure that Korie is drinking tap water...for the fluoride. As far as the other...hey...we all have our vices! You can balance it out by doing other things.

p..s.-I have been known to have a soda or two in my time...when desperate for caffeine and no coffee is available!

...and I hate to admit it...but some places I go to in the world (Middle East, "some" Paris Hotels, rural Turkey or Croatia, etc) I can gaurantee you I'm drinking bottled water. I drank tap water in Sharjah, UAE 2 years ago and paid for it for a week...

Omar Blasgen says:

I don't have a problem drinking tap water, but the taste. That is right, I want my water to have absolutely zero taste. Tap water just does not cut it. For that matter, a lot of bottled waters don't do it for me either. I like distilled. I know this makes me a water snob, but you have to draw the line somewhere. As far as fluoride goes, you can buy bottled water that has it minus the other crap. They may be able to purify the water to a specific standard (is that really enough) but the pipes it comes to you in are aging still.

My bike runs on sheer thigh power and a mediocre sense of balance.

Now if only car drivers would respect the cyclist's right to the road...

MarkyMarko says:

It is bus drivers I have more problem with, they seem to come so close when they overtake.

'Sheer thigh power' - I like that, trouble is, when I have finished my days cycling to and from work, my thighs feel anything but powerful! And then there is that hungry feeling which means you are tempted to snack on whatever is close to hand.

Thanks heaps for the invite Jo. Our little disgrace of a Prime Minister, Johnny "teflon" Howard said last week that the economy, not the threat of global warming is the biggest issue in Australia at the moment. He is a short sighted xenophobic embarrassment. Please dont take any notice of him, he'll be gone soon. I try to be as environmentally friendly as possible, it is difficult when the companies supplying us our energy are given no incentive to further explore alternative energy sources such as solar and wind power.

I read this from an interesting newsletter that I get...

Triclosan, widely used as an antibacterial ingredient in household hand sterilization products, breaks down rapidly when exposed to chlorinated water and produces toxic chemicals including chloroform, according to a study published on the Environmental Science & Technology research website As Soon As Publishable (ASAP), suggesting that many antibacterial products may not only be ineffective, but harmful.

Triclosan decomposes into chlorine byproducts in as little as one minute when exposed to chlorinated water at 100 degrees Fahrenheit, a temperature commonly reached in household use. This led the researchers to question whether triclosan-containing soaps even provide the purported anti-bacterial benefit.

The researchers found that people using these products would be exposed to chloroform levels 40 percent higher than that found in tap water.

The Consumer Wellness Center advises consumers to avoid purchasing antibacterial products made with triclosan. Use natural products containing tea tree oil or other herbal ingredients that are naturally antibacterial.

This just reinforces why we all need to quit using anti-bacterial products! The only problem is that unless you shop at Wild Oats/Whole Foods-type stores...they're VERY difficult to find.

Miss Jess says:

It's getting easier in Australia - Macro Wholefoods sells natural cleaning products that are just fabulous. Macro stores are popping up everywhere, at least in metropolitan areas, and the prices are reasonable - one of the reasons I always avoided organic, being a Uni student for the past 4 years...
