Kyle says:

I'd love some more RSS feeds: friend activity & announcements.

m Dot says:

I would like to suggest support for Twitter's javascript badge. It's a lot cleaner and I think people would rather use that, as opposed to the flash banner.

i second this.

#sm.r* says:

I third this. I love the javascript banner. Much nicer looking.

posted May 27

chrysb says:

At this moment we can't allow any javascript whatsoever that we don't control. It's a very important security measure.

How about being able to reply to profile comments like you can for groups and blog comments?

already suggested by everyone on virb

Jonathan says:

Lot of web apps are being added to Facebook. Do you think VIRB should be an open platform and allow developers to design widgets/tools specifically for it? Or should VIRB continue to take the "passive" approach and allow external media source one by one?

LEX says:

I really like what Facebook is doing.

posted May 28

Jonathan says:

Yes... and to think I almost abandoned my account!
If only VIRB has something like that...

Birdy says:

Ok, so this is an interface annoyance- when posting to your blog there are two very similar buttons that do two very different things:
One is a Create Blog Post button up at the top (new post). Down at the bottom there's a button that says Create Blog (save), with a Cancel button to its right.

I can not tell you how many times I've accidentally hit that top button when I'm done only to have the post disappear. And there's no hitting back either- you're just returned to the Blog overview.

Any chance of renaming the "Create Blog" button, which amounts to Post/Save to something like... "Post Blog" or "Save"? I'd also suggest green text, and red for the Cancel button.
It would be super extra nice if that top Create Blog Post button was renamed to "New Blog Post" or something.

#sm.r* says:

Amen. This happened to me just yesterday and almost made me fling my laptop across the room.

Ok. Maybe not that bad. But I was frustrated.

Another good idea Birdy!

goenfukyrself says:

i can dig this. i really wish there was some sort of save draft thing happening too like with gmail. but i guess maybe that's something that's really complicated. i don't know.

posted May 27

Birdy says:

@They Don't Call Me...
You can save your blog posts as drafts by unchecking "Publish entry" in the lower left.

posted May 27

Fyorl says:

Gmail does it automagically every few minutes though.

posted May 27

Tophe says:

I think "automagically" is my new favorite word :D

posted May 27

Jonathan says:

Yeah, me too. It sounds... automagical :P

#sm.r* says:

Ok. I know this might be silly. But a spell checker on the blog section would be awesome.

For those of us that type faster than we should sometimes...

Birdy says:

If you use FireFox there's a spellchecker built in. And I'm sure most of the folks on Virb would prefer you look at their pages in FF anyway.
:)

posted May 24

#sm.r* says:

Seriously. I actually had no idea and have had FireFox forever.

Where is it?

posted May 24

Birdy says:

It was introduced in 2.0. Its an inline spellchecker, misspelled words should be underlined in red. When you see a misspelled word ctrl or right click on it to see the spelling suggestions.
If its not on at all go to Preferences---> Advanced---> General---> Browsing and enable it (mac instructions).

posted May 24

m Dot says:

I never knew about the ctrl click thing.

posted May 24

Jonathan says:

It's little things like this that makes FireFox so awesome.

posted May 25

Birdy says:

You might find this useful too, it details some ways to beef up your spellchecker: FireFox Dictionary Hacks.

Jon-Kyle says:

apple has a spell checker built in for all native apps. moral of the story? uhhh get a mac

posted May 25

Joe says:

...or more cheaply, install firefox

posted May 25

annihilation [floating upon little pink pills] says:

or you could buy a mac and install firefox on it.

hmmm i've got to find a hack that works with my refusal to use capital letters... off to google...

posted May 25

Fyorl says:

I hate that spellchecker. It's annoying when I'm writing in German and it underlines everything in red

posted May 25

Birdy says:

@annihilation and @Fyorl-
If you follow the link I posted above for hacking the FF spellchecker it'll tell you how to add your own word lists to FF. That means uncapitalizing words and adding German dictionaries.

@JK- Compared to Firefox, Safari just sucks. So the OS spell checker's never done me any good online. yay, FF- no matter the platform.

posted May 26

annihilation [floating upon little pink pills] says:

yah, i wanted to avoid adding to the words list if possible.. but perhaps there's no way around it.

picked a word list from kevin's word list page
converted the text to lower case
pasted into persdict.dat

seems to work.

posted May 27

Fyorl says:

@Birdy: Thanks for the help. I'm not sure I can be bothered hacking the spellchecker though. I might just turn it off, I trust my speeling enough.

posted May 27

Ben Jenkinson says:

@Fyorl: You don't have to hack it, just install another language's dictionary. Firefox'll use that instead.

I have a request for allowable media. Could you allow embedded slide shows from Picasa? They're owned by Google, and Google is allowed.

Jonathan says:

Is it possible to allow all media provided by one source (Google in this case)?

posted May 23

Matt says:

I added picassa. What other Google services have flash embeds?

posted May 23

Joe says:

i don't know if this counts, but i absolutely need you to support this.
...well i dont NEED it, but it would make me happy :)

google reader shared items.

posted May 23

Birdy says:

@Joe- Until its approved you could maybe use one of the RSS widgets already approved. I'm sharing my starred items through SpringWidgets (see previous post).

posted May 23

Joe says:

yeah, i was thinking about it, but id rather wait to see if i can use googles cleaner interface.

posted May 23

Birdy says:

I agree, SpringWidgets could stand to allow a little more customization. The font for links is too big, and I'm less than keen on the glossy rounded window.

Joe says:

i don't know if you were or are planning on implementing RSS feeds for each group, but ...
I'm suggesting it

group RSS feeds

usually the group comments section only covers the last 7 or 8 hours...

Birdy says:

yup, that's been suggested before and they'll hopfully be implementing it. I vote a big double yay to this suggestion.

Groups are getting some serious love, this will be included.

Joe says:

Birdy says:

I know its been talked about before but its really driving me nuts so I thought I'd mention it again: "Comments You've Made" tab in the Comments section of Your Home I've commented on people's blogs and can't for the life of me remember where, so I can't go back to see if the conversation ever continued.

LEX says:

Speaking of comments, I can't figure this out... Is there a way to limit the number of comments shown? I've tried, but failed. If there's not, then I'd like to bold the question and turn it into a suggestion.

posted May 22

dal v3.3.10* says:

Im with you as well Birdy! It would be much more convenient to have comments made by yourself available in a tab linking back to the proflie.

posted May 22

Matt TheHat says:

I'd love to get notices of replies to comments I've made. That would remind me to look back at comments I've made on other blogs. Right now it only sends a notice of other people's comments on your blog.

posted May 23

Matt says:

Agreed. It's annoying to have to check back to see if someone responded.

Matthew Ellis says:

Down the road I think it would be neat to have friend pools. I'm sure there are more appropriate names for the concept, but I'm thinking how nice it would be implement the same technology currently used to move photos into albums to put friends in groups. These would be private categorizations where you can apply group rules to whomever you place in that 'pool'. This would be a great feature to use in conjunction with earlier suggestions like deciding to only let pre-defined friends view certain content/receive notifications of your profile updates.
