Shakuhachi

Breathe deep.

The Shakuhachi is a Japanese end-blown bamboo flute. It's made from the root portion of a thick-walled bamboo called 'madake' in Japanese. Though simple in appearance, the shakuhachi is very difficult to play; its magical quality is revealed to the listener by the purity of its tone.

I admit: I don't play the Shakuhachi. But I have a friend who does, and I've been thinking about taking it up. Is 28 too old to start?

Rob Morris says:

Go for it! At 28 you're a baby in the world of shakuhachi. For this instrument, maturity is an asset not a disadvantage. There's a reason why there are no child prodigy shak players. At least none that I've heard of.

Yes, that's what David told me the other day. He's offered to teach me (he is credentialed), but if I take lessons from him for anything, it will probably be the Japanese language (which I've studied in the past, though halfheartedly). Maybe we'll find a way to do both.
