A friend asked me what I thought of Joost as it stands today.

For some reason the new one won't load any video for me on my machine (could be issues on my company intranet).
I have been a big fan of what the guys have been putting together over the last year for this. And I do think they are paving the way for something new. I think they will be successful and I think they've done a good job of IPTV via the internet rather than via TV cable or Satellite lines %u2013 that means its a little more natural to the way we consumer content through our computer, although prone to be held by the constraints of how fast our ISP can deliver the content or our computer to play it .. but thats just technological issues (more relevant in developing countries) .. the point though is that they are developing the infrastructure and software interface to deliver to an audience they are grooming with content channels they have been signing up. Then add the widget concepts .. such as chatting to other people who are viewing the same channel, and you have something new and contemporary with what we expect from a trend of consuming media socially (well TV and Radio had traditionally always been a social experience).

I think that Joost need to keep up the momentum, and lets also remember its not really mainstream yet. When they start doing outdoor advertising, then they'll be taking on every other broadcast media publicly, trying to win opinion and shift the habits we've grown use to as a consuming public.

What should they watch out for? Definitely look to every way to free Joost from the computer. Make it work on hand-held devices over WiFi and 3G and be sure that it finds a home on set-top boxes (free view, TiVo, Apple TV, Microsoft Media Center). Above all it needs to co-opt the living room space and break free from a computer based viewing experience, cause that is just so "geek" - picture lonely soul awash in the glow of laptop screen on bed stuck in some student accommod...
