About

This group is for people who are interested in mass media and communications. This includes journalism, the music industry, publishing, TV, radio, film, etc. We're objective people who seek to understand how the world around us operates, and may work or be interested in working in media and communications, ourselves. We may not all agree, but we understand the complexities of issues in the media.

-We understand that the natural business forces behind the media. As such, we do not follow it blindly or ignorantly. At the same time, we do not fear it; we seek to understand it. We are against those who shun all mainstream media and entertainment sources and ignorantly jump on the anti-pop, anti-capitalism, anti-sellout, "underground," and/or "alternative media" bandwagons. This is the same ignorance reversed.

-We understand that the FCC (Federal Communications Comission) is not limiting our free speech. The FCC only has limited regulation power over over-the-air broadcasters, and it has been granted this limited power only because the airwaves are a "limited public resource" that should be used "in the interest of the public."

-We understand that there are both positives and negatives to the current American media system. We understand that corporate media mergers can be a dangerous business, and that journalism is and always has been threatened by outside interests; we also understand that journalists are not zombies, and that corporations are not inherently evil.

-We understand both the downfalls and the necessities of media gatekeeping, and we understand that all media is biased.

-We think people should be better educated in the media and how the world around them operates.
