I need some advice - I've decided there's no reason to keep my windows partition, it's just unused space.
I've got gparted open, and I see a 39mb fat16 partition, and the 25gb ntfs partition (this one has a boot flag, but I understand linux doesn't use that flag). I originally partitioned this machine during the ubuntu install. So I'm kind of hazy on how grub, and this kind of partition works. If I just use gparted to reformat these partitions, am I going to bork my boot up?

Well if you "reformat these partitions" then you'll lose all data from your windows partition and your linux. But I bet you didn't mean to say that! I'm not a pro at this so you may wana wait for the next chap to answer but if it were me, I'd delete the windows partition and then try booting. It should work. If not... then I'm sorry. haha. I have skrewed up my MBR before and had to stick the ubuntu cd in and fix it somehow. I'd have to search that again tho. Dude don't listen to me.
You could wait one week to do it, and I'll go first. I plan on doing the same thing then.

So what exactly does backing up the home folder do? I'd be interested in preserving my desktop layout. Would it do that?

well, I backed everything up, and reformated that partion. I also deleted the windows item from the grub menu. Boots up fine - but I have to sudo to use the new partition. Maybe I can fix that in fstab? Anyway, I may just do a fresh install now that I'm backed up anyway - It doesn't make that much sense to have a separate partition like that, and since that one is the first partition, I don't think I can merge it into my existing install....

You can actually stretch your linux partition to cover the whole drive if you wanted. But I would just reinstall everything since your allready backed up. Nothing like a fresh install.
Also now is a good time to try a new distro!

Is anyone else exited about this? I don't even edit multimedia that much but maybe I'll start!

plus the technical support that barely speaks english. Nothing against those hard working people, but If my mom can't understand the tech support, how can she fix her computer?

YEah - but to be fair, I doubt Mike Dell needs to call tech support. ;)

I mentioned Xfce below - after that I was on a minimal-resource-desktop kick, so I worked with fluxbox for a little while. I liked it pretty well - takes some configuration to get it right, but I like the minimal look of it too.
Since Feisty I've been on gnome/beryl

I've tried fluxbox 3 times and I think I need someone to teach me how to set it up because I can never figure out how it works hehe.

I too, like the simplicity of GNOME. IT gets beat up a lot, but I've never had any problems with it.

I love gnome, but have recently switched to xfce. It's not bad at all. I guess now I need to give kde a shot soon.

Josh, broadcom isn't a "no go". I've been using my broadcom wireless with edgy for a few months. You just gotta dig man! I also just installed feisty and got it working again, but this time it's even easier. Check it out, you just download a .deb and click it, done!http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=197102

Linksys WPC54G v2 has worked in Fiesty and Edgy. I think it uses the Texas Instruments chipset (AXC111), but not sure. Later models of the WPC54G use different chipsets.

Dude that is great news. I remember the first day at college with my ubuntu with wireless. I remember thinking "this is it, I can finally let go of windows." That was a great day. I guess my only gripe now is I can't get the ati 200m vidio driver going on that laptop. Not really a big deal tho, I don't game on it. But I guess I would once in a while if it did work!

Lemi know if yours is a little buggy. Mine is. Some times I have trouble connecting. I'm noticing that Fiesty uses a different program to connect to networks. I may just go back to the one I used with edgy, which I can't remember the name of off the top of my head.

And I got my wireless running smooth again. I just downloaded the wifi radar from synaptic. So you'll know what to do if yours acts a bit funny too! I didn't notice mine being buggy until I went from my house to the college and tried to connect.

Yeah I'm ready for it. I hope fiesty surprises me and change that pinkish brown theme out for something different. I get tired of changing all of that everytime I do a fresh install. Well, I guess theres more important things tho. I'll live with it if I have to, gosh!

At first, I didn't think much of the "brownish" Ubuntu theme, but it's kinda grown on me. Especially with the Ubuntu Chocolate wallpaper. Fortunately, it is very easy to change and most people do. :)

I guess the only thing I haven't figured out how to change is that rectangular thing that comes up after you log in. It usually says nautilus in small print at the bottom. Any ideas on that?

I've been running on Ubuntu on an old powerbook for a while now. There's a lot of stuff I can't get for linux/ppc which is a drag, but it serves it's purpose...
Today I switched it to Xfce desktop - and I'm SO impressed by how much faster it is. There's enough resources left over for the memory hog that is firefox :D

Yeah XFCE is the bomb. Check out the 'Icon box' you can add to your panel. I wish gnome had that damnit! I use gnome plus an xfce panel just so I can have that icon box thingy. I would totally switch to xfce but I hate the start menu layout. Maybe I'll figure out how to fix that to my likings one day.

I can't wait for Feisty! I've been playing with the beta, and it seems like it'll be an even bigger leap ahead than Dapper-to-Edgy was. New users are going to find it a lot easier to get everything (mp3s, codecs, etc) up and running, too. The countdown has begun... :D

Has anyone accomplished any decent video using Kino? I am having a miserable time with it. Maybe the problem is that my AVI files are from a Fuji digital still camera. They are mjpeg, I believe and I think Kino gags on them. I've tried every setting I can find but every clip I import ends up being reduced to a series of frames that come no where near the actual clip length.
