So - I use vim as my text editor. The learning curve is a bit steep at first, but past a certain point, it's incredibly efficient and fun. At work, I use it through Cygwin.

I wanted to be able to use vim to edit textareas in firefox. There are a few solutions out there if you google it, but most involve gvim (the windowed version of vim, which I don't use). I found that I could configure the it's all text firefox extension with the path to my cygwin vim (C:\cygwin\bin\vim.exe) - and it works beautifully, just opens vim in a command window.

that's pretty sweet!

I always try different text editors but invariably end up using vim again. it's really hard to get away from the keyboard shortcuts (especially hjkl) once you've got the hang of them. who wants to reach for the mouse/trackpad/whatever while they're typing something?!

yeah - right?

so, I've since moved to a linux machine at work. And, to use that FF extension with vim - I had to get the gnome version of vim. But it works fine, uses the same configuration file...

I use OS X, so I think vim is actually a bit out of date. it doesn't have some of the same cool syntax highlighting features that the version on my OpenBSD box has (7.something, I think). there's some version of gvim for OS X, but gvim has always weirded me out. I just with there was something like TextWrangler but with vim keyboard shortcuts. hell, everything should have vim keyboard shortcuts. I need to try turning them on in ksh.
