Firefox is truely the most amazing thing since sliced bread. I can't say enough to praise it. How I ever managed to live and breathe before I discovered the wonder of it I will never know. Thank you so much Joe for inviting me to this group, I can't imagine how it passed me by.

Has anybody tried out the Gran Paradiso Alpha 1? I'm a bit reluctant to give it a look; I'd hate to lose my precious my plug-ins and bookmarks.

Tremolo says:

Hmm... off the top of my head, I can think of a suggestion.

First of all, I don't think you'll lose your bookmarks, because ultimately you'll be (and SHOULD be) installing Gran Paradiso into an entirely separate directory from you original Firefox installation. However, if you're still worried about losing your bookmarks, you should export your bookmarks.

This is done by going into Firefox, choosing Bookmarks, then Organize Bookmarks. A new window will open. From there you choose File, then Export, and save it to a location of your choosing, but not anywhere inside the Firefox directory (just in case).

The bonus in all this is you can then import those bookmarks into Gran Paradiso (if it didn't do it automatically) by doing the same procedure in Gran Paradiso and choosing Import instead of Export - that's assuming they didn't change it much from Firefox.

As for plug-ins, if you don't have very many, just write down the names of the ones you use. If you have tons, then there is a plug-in that will save information about the ones you use. It won't actually save the plug-ins, but it will manage their names and the URLs so you can find and install them later. I forget the name of it. Help, anyone?

I did notice the warning on the GP alpha 1 page that reads "Current users of Mozilla Firefox should not use Gran Paradiso Alpha 1". So, I understand the reluctance. If you export your bookmarks and make a record of all your plug-ins... er... add-ons, you should be able to recover them later.

Hope that helped you out! Let us know what you think of Gran Paradiso. I haven't had a chance to try that yet.

Thanks for the help, but the stupid little bugger crashed as soon as it opened. Looks like I'll probably wait until the beta release.

I use Firefox all the time and just use the IE Tab add-on for those sites that need it. Maybe give that a shot. :)

I Love Birdy - Leesa Leva says:

I think it sort of depends on what you use your profile for. If its completely a personal profile then screw it (maybe put a link to FF and an admonition about using IE). But if you're pushing yourself as a designer, web or otherwise, I think you've gotta try to fix it.
Mine was really wonky in IE and it just kept bugging the crap outta me until I had to fix it just to stop thinking about it...
...only to have someone tell me its broken in Opera. Oy, it never ends.
sigh.

Deuterium says:

I have a similar problem. My profile looks good in Firefox, but the whole profile shifts in IE. I just can't be bothered fiddling with the CSS again, so I'm going to leave it probably.

Just Because iCan says:

So, Firefox has been my main browser for a long time now, however I [used to] constantly use Camino and Safari also. Not because I wanted to or liked them, but I needed a way to manage multiple instances of myself (personal, work, podcast, etc...) on the same sties without having to log in and out of all of them.

Well, this is no longer needed as I just started experimenting with using multiple profiles in Firefox. Now I have several different profiles all complete with it's own set of bookmarks / plugins. This has made my life so much simpler and, most importantly, eliminated my need to ever launch those other inferior browsers. I simply love it.

Anyone else using multiple profiles in Firefox?

P.S.
If so, anyone know how to switch between them without having to quit and relaunch?
