This is my first crack at a vegetable gardening - The onions and corn didn't really work out, but the tomatoes, cucumbers, broccoli, lettuce, pole beans, and various peppers came out great. Tomatoes on the left, peppers and pole beans in the center, peppers and corn on the right.

Thanks! It's all kind of dying now - I will probably change the order a bit next year.

It is now August. I grew 4 tomato plants in my garden this past year.there was no vast harvest to mention I saw on television a little garden you can plant in your kitchen with no dirt and a little light on top. Looks like I could grow more with that. . My husband has plans for a fall garden. He really has no time but , time will tell. I will be back with more garden news later.

Has anyone tried using carpet as a weed blocker? I'm really hill billy sometimes and have used old rolls of carpet upside down to block the weeds. Seemed to work great last year! Any thoughts or suggestions on this concept? (p.s. you can read a little about this in my blog. I'm hoping to keep a regular entry on this topic.. Just to keep up to date on how it works-or doesn't work)

I read about it in a magazine a long time ago , I remember they used an oval braided rug then cut out rings in the oval to use as planting beds and step on the remaining rings. Looked cool. I think it was an herb garden.

Does anyone have experience with raised beds?
Filling the ones I built is going to be my weekend "away from the computer" project. I'm wondering if I need to add drainage with gravel or anything.

It's my first year too!
So, I am sorry I don't have any good tips. I'm in zone 7 (Portland, Oregon).
I have everything sprouting in little starters, but I have yet to put them in my big garden. I'm pretty excited though.
I will post pics soon.
