i guess this is a really old thread, but i'll respond anyway.
i got to give a presentation on _In the Mood_ and _2046_ at school, and one thing that i became fascinated by while viewing the dvds over and over, was how different things seemed after i decided to cheat and watch all the deleted scenes on the special features. it was sort of amazing because some of the really big ellipses that are left open in the film make a bit more sense after you see what was deleted (like when mr. chow suddenly falls sick, or when mrs. chan starts feeling guilty), but after you go back and re-watch the original cut, you see that everything that got removed is there anyway -- only it's told through a turn of the head, a cloud of smoke, a slight gesture or hesitation.
this is one of my favorite movies of all time, with or without the deleted scenes.
and though it may be cheating (i don't know, is it cheating? where does the film end?), i'd still recommend watching the special features just to see mr. chow in the 70s with a mustache and some wicked shades!
