I haven't used dream host in a long time but I remember they had some valuable posts in the forums for getting started. I ditched dreamhost for site5. I'm very ahppy with them and if you're in a position to move, I would.

So I decided to jump into the world of Rails, and my god, I'm in love. The reason I decided to make the switch (not entirely, but for a side project) is because I really wanted to try out the Radiant CMS. It looked amazing.

word on Radiant. I'm excited about integrating it into my app at some point. I've been a VB and .NET type of programmer most of my career, so Ruby on Rails is a welcome breath of fresh air. RoR makes programming fun again.

You've got the "programming fun" part right. I haven't tried Radiant yet, but I've certainly been enjoying Mephisto.

Rails is definetly fun and user oriented. I've been a PHP and C++ programmer for several years and within the past few months the jump to Ruby/Rails has had a hugely positive impact on my enjoyment for programming.

Me personally, I haven't been much of a PHP programmer up until the past six months or so, and even though I don't know all of the intricate details of PHP/MySQL/etc, I've found that learning RoR is fairly easy, and not as hard as I had expected.

I've been looking for some good RoR books, so if you guys have any you swear by currently, definitely let me know!

I got into Ruby/Rails because I wanted to roll my own CMS so I haven't actually played around with Radiant or Mephisto. I have, however, browsed their source code extensively. I also play around a good bit with image processing via RMagick. I'm working on a few art projects using it.

I'm pretty new to programming... I started more on the design end and wanted to learn to program after facing various kinds of constraints and frustrations in my projects. So Ruby on Rails is my first foray into programming. And though I really can't compare it to the scant stuff I managed to do in PHP, I will say that as a writer I really enjoy writing RoR code.

I started by reading about 200 pages of David Black's Ruby for Rails, but decided it wasn't quite the intro I needed and that I'd come back to at a later point. Then I started Agile Web Development with Rails, by Dave Thomas, and like ucantblamem, highly recommend it.

anyone here have a lot of experience with Radiant? I've got a project built in it but I want to tweak it a little and I'd love to pick someone's brain
