Aussie Rules Footy (AFL)

See the big men fly!

The AFL is the number one football code in Australia and easily one of the most popular spectator and recreational sports in the country. In 2005 the AFL Premiership Season had a total regular season attendance of 6,283,788, and the average attendance of 35,703 was the third highest of any professional sports league in the world.

AFL is played between two teams of 18 players on cricket ovals, or similar-sized oval shaped arenas. The game is distinguished from other kinds of football (Rugby, Soccer etc) by the fast, relatively free movement of the ball (partly due to the absence of an offside rule) and the awarding of a free kick for any clean catch — known as a mark — of a ball which has been kicked more than 15 metres.

The game can only be truly appreciated LIVE, in the flesh. So much is going on in the field at any one time that it's practically impossible to faithfully capture the excitement and action on TV.

Whats everyones opinion on the Ben Cousins saga??

Is he gone from the AFL for good or now that the charges have been dropped, Is he going to get picked up by someone else?? What a disastrous time for West Coast though

Amber says:

Yeah, they are sucking at the moment- but I'll still keep going to the games.

After all, this is the Demons- they'll play with your emotions every time, good or bad.

(BTW, always fun when you go into a game with your supporters doubting that you're going to win- the crowd is out for blood)

0-4 aarrggh!
Nothing like being at the G.
I dont like supporters that slag their own though. Its way more fun bagging Bumbers or Collingwood supporters.

HUGE congrats to my fellas (Brisbane Lions) on making it through to the pre-season cup final. Here I was thinking being overseas again this year was going to fine knowing the the Lions were going to go through another "rebuilding" year, but it looks like the young kids have got the goods and it could be a good year! Guess I'll have to love off torrents each week yet again...!

I played Inside Back for the UMASS Amherst Rugby team for a couple of years. I loved the game and quite frankly getting hit was more fun sometimes than hitting someone else. Being able to get right back up after getting annihilated, without any semblance of pads or equipment, was a true rush and a testament to one's own fortitude. Australian Rules always looked like more fun and I wish there were readily available leagues here in the States.

Mate I can't tell you how much I agree with your take on the "getting hit is more fun" observation. As for being able to get a run in the states, try the USAFL website for more information.
