American media has long portrayed Africa as a negative, gigantic blob, oozing with AIDS and horror and destruction, oh my. Africa's identity cannot and should not be reduced to such a gloomy view. As an expat of a West African nation, I propose that Americans start listening to and learning from the incredible diversity of life in African countries.
This is not to say that there isn't AIDS, horror and destruction. There is, but there is so much more that we are missing in America. There is music, there is innovative technology, there is literature and there is more. It won't be easy to find those things, since Americans are being blinded by well-intentioned but rather misled campaigns. This group exists for people to actively seek out what Africa has to offer them, for those people who are listening to Africa.
One love.
