Here's a little article from NYTimes.com called "A hipper crowd of shushers." by Kara Jesella
Librarians? Aren't they supposed to be bespectacled women with a love of classic books and a perpetual annoyance with talkative patrons' the ultimate humorless shushers?
Not any more. With so much of the job involving technology and with a focus now on finding and sharing information beyond just what is available in books, a new type of librarian is emerging the kind that, according to the Web site Librarian Avengers, is "looking to put the 'hep cat' in cataloguing."

I'm sorry, but I did not get "cool," "hip," or "hep cat" vibes from that article. I got an article about dorky librarians who were trying really hard to convince other people how cool they really were. In fact, by my calculations, the more a group tries to impress the fact that they are cool, the less cool they actually are. We should embrace the uncool factor and be who we are instead of trying to be "hipsters." (I hate that word by the way... definitely NOT cool).

I didn't actually read the article, but I am plenty convinced library people are cool. Though, I'm sure my measurement of "cool" is different than the societal standards that this article may employ....

I spent almost a decade doing everything from shelving to Web design for libraries. I'm not technically a librarian, but I fully support them and I know how awesome the awesome librarians can be.

I used to play a reference librarian on weekends. I'm currently a web developer, information architect, flash designer and a hundred other things at a public library.
