I had 13 years of classical training, 2 of which I was secretly working on the fiddle the entire time. Now, for the past 5 years it's been mostly fiddle all the way for me, though I do teach myself a classical piece from time to time to stay well-rounded.
Most of us were probably trained on a violin. It was only later in life that we discovered that a fiddle is a violin with attitude. Sure, we appreciate classical music and training, but the saying, "The violin sings, the fiddle dances," is too true to just sit back and listen.
