For people with degenerative disc disease or other disc problems, doctors in China and Hong Kong have transplanted donor discs into five patients who report dramatically reduced or eliminated pain after five years. In the next few years, this may present an alternative to the traditional treatment of spinal fusion, as well as artificial discs and spinal cord stimulators.
In addition, IDET is also showing promising results by heating the inside of discs in the lumbar region to promote thickening of the disc as well as cauterizing nerve endings to reduce chronic discogenic pain.
