Hey everyone! Delighted to see such a community of Virb-ers with impeccable taste in music. Post-rock does rule my world, rock my socks, makes my day and all that! So there...
Aereogramme, The Twilight Sad, Mice Parade, God Is An Astronaut, The American Analog Set, Isis, Khonnor, iLiKETRAiNS, Amber Asylum, Tristeza, Holy Fuck, Fly Pan Am... are some of my favorites from this beloved genre at the top of my head. Actually I tagged over 200 bands under post-rock name on my last.fm. Here is the link for those bored ones! ;-)

Uhm in my opinion, Khonnor is more electronic/ ambient. And The American Analog Set, well thats different, but I dont consider them post-rock, ohh well! who cares!.

added with the exceptoin of above cos I tend to agree - kind of why Boards of Canada aren't there. They're more ambient than what I consider to be Post-Rock.
OK Then new debate - What defines 'Post-Rock'?
[i love how pretentious this question is!]

Ok, then. Nothing beats a desirious discussion on post-rock! :-)
Just had a look on wikipedia for the term post-rock:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Post-rock
Some quoted passages here:
"The post-rock sound incorporates characteristics from a variety of musical genres, including ambient, jazz, electronica, and experimental."
"Post-rock is a music genre characterized by the use of musical instruments commonly associated with rock music, but utilizing rhythms, harmonies, melodies, timbre, and chord progressions that are not found in rock tradition."
"In some respects, this is similar to the music of Steve Reich, Philip Glass, and Brian Eno, pioneers of minimalism."
"Some bands, such as Rachel's and Clogs, combine post-rock with classical music, while others such as Godspeed You! Black Emperor are so far removed from popular music in their sparseness of arrangement and use of repetition, that they are frequently compared to minimalism."
"Isis and Pelican, among others, have fused metal with post-rock styles. The resulting sound has been termed post-metal."
...
See, it is a bit complicted. Or simple as it has a wide range of musical span (which is what I love most about post-rock anyway).
I mean if Stereolab or Brian Eno can be tagged as post-rock why can't some other electronic ambient bands? To me anything including some of these feautres: instrumental - rock, math rock, ambient, dark sounding electronica, minimal rock, some shoegazing elements ... could be named as post-rock. "Butterfly Explosion" for example is a decent sample for bands blending shoegaze with post rock perfectly. How would you describe "Efterklang"? It has a Khonnor-ish sound but it is simply post-rock (IMHO), with its experimental sound outstanding clearly. Why American Analog Set is not post rock where The Album Leaf and Mice Parade are? What is SO different from each other about those bands?

Add "immanu el". They are a fucking amazing Swedish band. The fact is that their debut album release is today. I can not wait to have it.
Oh! and recently heard about "The Strange Death of Liberal England". They are just great! add them too.

Jeremy from TWDY got seriously injured so they had to cancel a few shows. I wish him the best, though.

i think its really hard to say which postrock album is the greatest since postrock is so hard to define and might even be defined by its variety. Takk by sigur ros could be my answer but i'd also think about something more "classic" like a mogwai album, young team or rock action...

interesting call...Takk would have to be there or there abouts, but what about Skinny Fists or Yanqui UXO? and from Mogwai, I think Mr Beast is their best album to date.
it's almost too tough to call - it's why i wanted to her other peoples suggestions...
