Just playin' --- They don't need to be in every episode... They're about as minor as characters get on that show...

This next episode is going to be giant! I kinda always assumed John had died on the island and his body was shipped to mainland. At that point the site of his body and coercion of Ben made everyone want to go back. But the fact he was alive for a while on the mainland. How the hell did he get there? Time travel has happened and I get it. But wormholes to travel over distances? Is that what happened?
