Hefty Records’ experimental sound journey started in 1995. The “sound” was prefaced by an ingrained Chicago aesthetic—a get-down-to-business mentality and a melting-pot of musical genres, generally characterized as beat-centric, electronic-influenced sound with carefully crafted production. The Hefty sound is often described as “future roots music” because of an apparent tension between lo-fi and hi-fi, between man-made and machine- made. The label also derives its musical identity from the cross-pollination and collaboration between its artists.
