I'm sorry your newspapers and statuses are prematurely misleading to you. However, the race for PROP 8, the ban on gay marriage proposition, has NOT been won. I repeat, NOT been won.
Let's consider the facts as they stand.
- As of this morning there were 3 to 4 million votes left uncounted. This might seem like a lot, but at the time, around 9 million votes counted total. This would amount to a 30 - 40 % increase in counted votes.
- As of noon, there was only a 400,000 margin between yes and no. This seems like a large number, but compare it to the fact above. Anything could happen.
- Regardless, a four percent gap is not one to cry about. Honestly, I would be more upset if 8 passed 60-40, similar to the outcome of Prop 22 (which won with 61% of the popular vote).

Statement by No on Prop 8 Campaign on Election Status
Roughly 400,000 votes separate yes from no on Prop 8 - out of 10 million votes tallied.
Based on turnout estimates reported yesterday, we expect that there are more than 3 million and possibly as many as 4 million absentee and provisional ballots yet to be counted.
Given that fundamental rights are at stake, we must wait to hear from the Secretary of State tomorrow how many votes are yet to be counted as well as where they are from.
It is clearly a very close election and we monitored the results all evening and this morning.
As of this point, the election is too close to call.
Because Prop 8 involves the sensitive matter of individual rights, we believe it is important to wait until we receive further information about the outcome.

NO on Prop 8
Alright, you can get mad now.. it's been called. It's passed... but the good news? Compare it to the Prop 22 results in 2000. We're a lot better off in only 8 years. This is good news.
