Last Five Dollars
"Last five dollars,"
I say.
"It's my last five dollars!"
Do you hear me
calling?
Change chiming like church bells
in my
plastic polystyrene pockets of hope.
Gray grafittied grindstones
stepping up, up, up
and always down.
Do you see my tears?
They've added up these years.
Each one shed in fear
while watching you with your ears
plugged.
"Last five dollars,"
I say.
"It's my last five dollars!"
Do you hear me
calling?
Pacing past perfume counters,
casting curses on clouds
down, deep into their demise.
Talking to your torso,
blindly being belligerent to me.
Staring straight into the sun
rising up, up, up
and always down.
Do you hear my voice?
Do I give you no choice?
You and your fucking schemes.
Me, with my lost dreams
for you.
"Last five dollars,"
I say.
"It's my last five dollars!"
Do you hear me
calling?
Seven days since sharing a cigarette,
four Fridays watching your pay days
and half a heart, too heavy
from six Sundays stolen from God.
Always lifted up, up, up
and let down.
They shut off my electricity
yesterday, right in front of me.
I wonder, when I'm on my knees,
don't you see the complexities
in dreams?
"Last five dollars,"
I say.
"It's my last five dollars!"
Do you hear me
calling?
Tonight tastes like truth -
candles, cascading cylindrical shadows,
fiery flames, my fixated eyes
rising up, up, up
and falling down.
I dream before sleeping.
I laugh before weeping.
Me and my silly dreaming...
It is my freedom you're keeping
from me.
"Last five dollars,"
I say.
"It's my last five dollars!"
Do you hear me
calling?
