Words for Hyder Ali:
"Four-piece Hyder Ali play a distinctly airy kind of hip-hop... there are plenty of groups working on a strain of hip-hop that proudly flaunts its live-band chops, and Hyder Ali move the chains nicely with their music. "Sunrise," for instance, recalls no other act so much as Halloween, Alaska, which is certainly not the first band you'd think of when considering live hip-hop... The lyrics are thoughtful and introverted, but never so self-involved that they forsake the groove of the music. It's soulful stuff that should translate beautifully to the live setting."

"If it seems like rap acts with live bands are making a resurgence around here lately, it may be due to boredom. The traditional structure of the typical rap group, i.e. a couple rappers and a DJ, can get sort of monotonous. As the local rap music contingency becomes more saturated with each passing month, the need for diversity in sound and style is more evident than ever.
Few can touch what Hyder Ali have accomplished in that vein. The lyrics are personal and empathic, something you could play with mom in the car and not have to worry about offending her fragile ears. But the music is really what sets them apart. It's incredibly wide and atmospheric, entrancingly new age at times yet energetic enough to keep you awake and wide-eyed the whole way through. Were it not for the vocals, some might even consider it ambiant or trip-hop, though both definitions would fall short of the glory."
