Toronto's electro/indie group In Support of Living create and perform shimmering soundscapes conjuring emotive atmospheric music along the lines of Boards of Canada, Stereolab, My Bloody Valentine, Mogwai, Sigur Ros, Ladytron, Soulwax and Alan Braxe remixes.
Founding member Brad Ketchen (Hollowphonic) uses guitar, rickety samples, toy keyboards and electronic mixes alongside the instrumentation of bandmates, Tyler Drygas (Escalate) on drums, Cal Hager (Hollowphonic) on guitars and Ursula Campbell on vocals and theremin. Within the group, members have performed along side such groups as The Juniour Boys, Soundtrack of our Lives, A Silver Mt Zion, Super Furry Animals, Low and The Manic Street Preachers.
Additional artists who have collaborated with the group include Katherine Shipley (Science International), Ben Deschamps (The Ghost Is Dancing) on violin, Shandy Kerns (Escalate) on piano, Rozalind MacPhail on flute, and Alphonse Lanza (Dirty 30) on moog and other fine gadgetry. With an acquiescent circle of players, live shows blossom as a minimal two-piece or flourish further as a robust wall-of-sound collective of nine. Frequent collaboration with US filmmaker Rob Tyler adds a multimedia element to performance that charges songs with entrancing rapturous images, transcending the barrier of sound.
