Blur 1 / Ink on mylar / 16” x 40”

They may seem like MAYA generated drawings, but they were done using the old school technique known as “ink on Mylar.” Si-Yeon Min, one of the architects, expressed his excitement over the results, “Nowadays, there are too many computer generated drawings out there and we thought it may be a good time to go back to using our own two hands to achieve more a direct and emotional touch in our drawings.”


Blur 2 / Ink on mylar / 16” x 40”

The drawings are the result of a conceptual exercise relationship between a glass facade and a plaza: In day time, those two relationships are distinctive, the glass facade as vertical and the plaza as horizontal. But when evening comes, people easily can see through the interior of the building from the plaza. That is the moment when exterior becomes interior and interior becomes exterior. This is also the blurring of horizontal and vertical.

If you’re in London this weekend, don’t miss the Termite Pavilion at Pestival.

The piece is in part based on the pioneering work of Dr Rupert Soar and the TERMES project, a team of international experts based in Namibia who have created the first ever 3D scans of termite mounds. Their findings have been a embraced by entomologists and architects alike, and have featured in Sir David Attenborough’s ‘Life in the Undergrowth’ series.

A team of architects and engineers selected a central section of the termite mound scan and scaled it up to a size which would allow humans to move through it. The structure arrived in kit form and was put together on site. It is made of cross laminated timber, sourced from Austrian spruce, for reasons of sustainability, durability and cost.

The Termite Pavilion is an art and science collaboration between Softroom Architects, Freeform Engineering, Atelier One, Chris Watson, Haberdasherylondon, KLH, and Pestival.
