Israel Martínez (born Mexico, 1979) is a sound artist working on several different fronts: he has one foot planted in the world of experimental electronic music composition, and the other firmly placed in the realm of sound installation (his site-specific projects and sonic actions would fall under this heading). He seeks to create a variety of works in a multitude of formats.
Israel M began making computer music in 2002. He is a co-founder of the Mexican electronic music label Abolipop. From the beginning he has been known for his shades-of-grey aesthetic, full of sound layers that evolve into a constant approximation and dissociation at the same time. Most of his compositions carry an extra-musical subject - a social reflection through sound – as in his piece “Mi vida” (2007 Prix Ars Electronica Award of Distinction), which critiques the abuse of the car in countries like Mexico or the U.S.
He has released tracks on many sonic-art and experimental music compilations in Mexico, as well as two EP’s: Cubensis and Los Demonios de la Lengua (this last one with vocal improvisations), and a compilation created between 2006 and 2007, titled Exorcizios (Abolipop, 2008) which received much critical acclaim in publications worldwide, including a review in The Wire magazine (UK).
Over the past 6 years Israel M has performed throughout Mexico, England, Austria and Spain, participating in high-profile festivals including Ars Electronica (Austria), Radar, Mutex MX and Visiones Sonoras (Mexico). His electroacoustic and acousmatic music has also been played in festivals in the United States, France and Colombia. Currently he works with the groups Lost Martínez (electronic improvisation) and Vlow Ensemble (guitar improvisation, electronica and video).
Israel M is one of the best-known young sound artists in Mexico, along with others like Rogelio Sosa and Mario De Vega. He has composed commissioned works for several festivals and institutions in Mexico, including Transitio MX, Fonoteca Nacional, Festival del Centro Histórico, Instrumenta, Radio UNAM and Butoh Dance Company 0.618.
