Je Suis

I'm a drummer, vocalist, and tenuous guitarist from outside Toronto. I make poems, and one day they started turning into songs. I listen to music in a madly continuous stream, so these songs contain pieces of all sorts of musicians; also a good many poets snuck themselves in along with my own poetry. This is rounded out by some old photographs from the forties and fifties, several references to feedback, and a fascination with literature.

My songs (which I will put up in demo form as soon as possible) sound like things that are sweet and yet a little fuzzy with distortion, poetry in victorian paintings, people in love but not quite happy yet, the nineties, and vintage beauty. Some artists who've influenced me (either lyrically or spiritually, and I leave you to discern which is which) are: Showbread, U2, Bound Stems, Bright Eyes, Neutral Milk Hotel, The Arcade Fire, Bob Dylan, The Long Winters, mewithoutYou, Paper Route, Simon & Garfunkel, The Windswept Stars, The Mountain Goats, Anathallo, Broken Social Scene, as well as various photographers, beats, and poets from www.youngpoets.ca/forum (Sada, Woomble, Vrover, QB, and lots of other beautiful people).

I am also very interested in making this a joint venture with someone named Jonas, because 'Janie and Jonas' has a certain something than 'Janie Rushing' lacks. Also because a boy named Jonas would have a pretty good chance of being a better guitarist than I am.

I have six songs written that I'm planning to make into an EP over the summer. Bits of the EP will pay tribute to Neutral Milk Hotel, but mostly it will just be a tribute to the phrases in my head and some boys I have loved or plan to love. Hopefully in the next few weeks I can get some demos recorded (fun things like poorly synthesized tuba and harpsichord, managing to actually play the songs I've written on guitar, experimenting with adding bass and/or drums to some of the songs, album artwork... jazz like that.)

The EP is tentatively called 'Pen-And-Ink Hummingbirds' and will feature tracks with awesome names like:
1991
A Love Song For Jeremy Barnes
Pen-And-Ink Melody
The Song of the Great Capitulation
A Love Song For Alan Lyle
and possibly something about a sailor and plums.

"We all admire the spangled acrobat with classical grace meticulously walking his tight rope in the talcum light; but how much rarer art there is in the sagging rope expert wearing scarecrow clothes and impersonating a grotesque drunk! I should know." (Vladimir Nabokov) Thank you for your friendship! Musical greetings from Munich/Germany! Feel free to download my music, dear Janie!
