Pickwick Portfolio

I think I have one of the most random portfolios when it comes to art and music. I am a singer/songwriter of genres ranging from gospel, to electronic, to '80s-style, to poetic/emo, to comedy. (I have started uploading music, finally. Enjoy!) I haven't performed much since early last year, and I miss it a lot.

I most recently worked in the administrative profession, which makes me fight issues of control, but I am also on scholarship, going to school for Fashion Design and (maybe) eventually own my own business (in the meantime, check out PickwickPortfolio.Etsy.com). Who knows? At this point, I just want at least a 2 year degree on my resume. My dream job is being part of a creative planning team (like designing rides/experiences at theme parks) or a comedy writing group (writing sketches for SNL or whatnot).

Right now, though, I am most satisfied if I have time for watching one or two of my favorite TV shows with my amazing husband, Bryce (http://www.virb.com/bryce). If I didn't have to work, I think I could follow a lot of different areas of interest (painting, petting tiny dogs, eating yellow curry thai food, hanging out with friends, burying time capsules, etc...)

We'll see what happens.

P.S. Regarding the music:
1) Please notice that the "Songs from the School Room Floor" album has a picture of a ghost on a unicycle.
2) '74 I wrote for my husband - it was actually made into a music video and I surprised him at our wedding reception in 2006.
3) Viva La Revolucion was a video series for a local youth group - both my husband and I (among other friends like http://www.virb.com/philshay) submitted background music for it.

Blogging Day 7 (should be Day 22) - The Wash

Have you ever had a good opportunity come to you, and then you did the math, finding out that it would be a wash?

My super kind brother-in-law had a job opening at his work, and gave me the inside lead. I got more info. It was part time, $9/hr, and a 70 mile round trip.

Unfortunately:

9 x 5 = $45 about how much I'd make a day
70 x .55 = $38.50 about how much it would cost to drive out there and back a day (plus wear & tear, etc.)
$45 - $38.50 = $6.50 before taxes - about how much lunch would cost

Oh well. I've still got great reviews from family and friends on their custom orders (PickwickPortfolio.Etsy.com). We'll see what comes of it.

Blogging Day 7 - The Card

In the middle of our personal financial crisis, a card came to us with no name or return address. It had $1000 cash in it and read:

God knows what's in your heart
and what you need before you ask.
Even when you
don't know for sure, God knows,
because He knows you.
He knows the outcome
of every situation,
and He's guiding you
even when you might feel that you have lost your way.
He knows how much you can bear,
and He will give you strength
and fill you with His grace
and blessings
as He walks with you
every step of the way.

He is surrounding you
with His love
and holding you gently
in the palm
of His hand.
~Sharon Valleau

As you can imagine, this was of great encouragement to us.

Blogging Challenge Day 6 - free food

One of the things we've checked out since going down to 1/4 of our "normal income" was a free food program put on by "Church Without Walls" in Mesa. We showed up one early Wednesday morning, not sure what to expect. We got in line, signed in, then walked towards the volunteers handing out food. There were cardboard bins full of about-to-be-expired food from local grocers. The volunteers were handing bags of food out. Bryce and I walked down the line and were given bags and bags and bags of bread items. We had a plastic container of about 40 mini croissants, loaves and loaves of various kinds of bread, a pack of hoagie rolls, and a caramel pecan pull-apart cake to boot. Another bag held bean and rice, peanut butter, grape juice, and tuna. No one said a word to us and once we got back to the car with our arms loaded, Bryce whispered to me "What just happened?" It was such a blessing.

WARNING: Do not attempt to contact parents of children you babysat over 3 years ago to ask if they need a babysitter again. If the over-protective mom doesn't remember you, she will be worried where you got her kids names.

I was just trying to think of creative ways to earn money while I work on PickwickPortfolio.Etsy.com! God, what's the deal?? UGH. No one likes to be thought of as a creep.

Blogging Challenge Day 4 - More Irony

Out of the few interviews I was called on to attend, two happened in the same week. One was within the same field I had previously been working in before being laid off. This field has a lot of politics that are hard for some people to handle, and I wasn't anxious to go back to it (though most people were awesome to work with). The other interview was with a non-profit that I would be honored to be a part of. My interview went awesome, and I loved the 2 ladies in the small office I hoped to work in (part time, good pay with benefits!).

The week I was supposed to hear back from both interviews, was my 3 year anniversary and my husbands birthday. We were blessed to go to Disneyland for free. Rainy and cold in Anaheim, but short lines meant a lot of fun, yet in the back of my mind, I was waiting for the call from the non-profit. I had to know, so from Adventure Land, I called. They said they were waiting to hear back from their version of "corporate", and it was taking longer than expected. That same day, I got a call from the other position offering me the job (part time, okay pay, no benefits). I asked if I could tell them my decision the following week. They gave me 3 days.

Monday rolled around and I had to decide. No word from the non-profit. I called the other position and declined. I wasn't sure I could handle working in the same environment as my last job quite yet. No word from the non-profit.

Finally I received word from the non-profit!!! Corporate was closing their branch.

When you have nothing but time on your hands, what do you do? Well, watch a lot of sindication at first, but then things you've been meaning to do pop into your mind. I had been working on a screenplay for a while, but only had about 30 pages, so when my sister told me of a comedy pilot contest (http://www.nytvf.com/2009_scripts_info.htm), I translated my screenplay into a 30 minute pilot. Thank God for lay-offs? Well, I might get FOX to cut me a deal by the end of the year.

Blogging Challenge Day 2

Before my last day of work, after being told of my lay-off, I was connected with someone who was looking for an employee with my experience. I had an awesome reference letter (the COO had me write it myself), and the first interview went great - two hours of great conversation. The second interview was equally good: passing tests and meeting the people I would work with. I was offered the job - 40 hrs/wk, but with the ability to keep going to school. Though I debated accepting (the job was in an industry I wasn't sure I was a fit for), I went ahead and said yes, and sent my spring school schedule so they would be in the know.

Thank God! A job right out of the gate - benefits and everything.

Then I got an email about my school schedule..."When I said we'd be flexible, I thought you would take night and weekend classes." They never mentioned me taking night and weekend classes. Alas, both parties decided that we were trying to hard to make it fit, and said our good-byes and good lucks.

I wouldn't know that 6 months into the future, I'd only have had 3 other interviews.

Blogging Challenge Day 1 of BEING LAID OFF

Being Laid Off

Day 1:
In November 2008 my supervisor came into my office and closed the door. I was told I was being laid off. I laughed! My initial reaction was, "That is...hilarious."

I had been struggling with direction in my current environment for some time, and never felt a release inside to move on. When I was told I was being laid off, it was sort of as if the decision was finally made for me.

I was told that the day before Thanksgiving would be my last day, and my last paycheck would come mid-December. My supervisor left my office, and I called my husband. REWIND: Back in the summer, my husband felt very strongly to quit his job. I won't go through the long list of reasons, but I agreed. It was "bad timing," but had to be done. It was "bad timing," because I had decided to go back to school and finally get a degree on my resume. That fall I was going down in hours to make time for school, so we were already going to lose 1/4 of my paycheck, and now all of his. FLASH FORWARD: So, I called my husband. He felt the same way as me, in the fact that the decision was finally made.
