Jeff Caylor

It never seemed like my parents had very good music when I was a kid. They had a lot, just not much that I was really drawn to. I found a handful of their 45's and even fewer LP's that I really liked. One record that stands out in my memory, though, was Elton John's Greatest Hits.

I would play that record and picture Elton's brother "Daniel" flying away in an airplane bound for Spain. I would try to figure out what "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" had to do with the Wizard of Oz. And I would imagine the bars where Elton and his friends would go to fight on Saturday nights, since they were alright for fighting.

In hindsight, I think I really appreciated the stories and emotion in those songs. And somehow, this British dude with huge glasses managed to connect with a little kid from Indiana.

That's the magic of songwriting that I really love. I love the way you can put the notes and words together and it can have its own meaning apart from you.

Sometimes I imagine all these little s.o.s.'s can have a positive effect on someone else. You get all honest and transparent. You cry for help in a song. You write words that beg for someone to come and save you. And then, if everything goes right, in the end, the song ends up saving someone else.

Two Kinds of Honesty - Coldplay vs Jay Z

I like this video for a few reasons. Mainly because you have Chris Martin singing in a kind of honesty that's a little metaphorical and riddle-ridden. Then you have Jay Z who comes in and gives a very specific kind of interpretation to the song. I like both kinds.

FAWM with or Without Fawm.org

Last year this time, I took part in a crazy songwriting marathon called February Album Writing Month, or FAWM. It was a blast and quite a success in my opinion. I came out with about 8 songs that will appear on my upcoming CD, What Birds Dream.

In case you want to participate, this year's FAWM.org is still under construction. Should be live in the next few days, I'm guessing.

However, whether or not the site is live, I'm writing 14 songs during the month of February. I've been trying to get as many people as possible to join me this year. Are you with me?

Just wanted to take a second and give an update on the new album. I'm dedicating almost all of next week to production. In fact, I've been working on it quite a bit this month. If all goes well, I'll be doing a CD release in April or May. I'm planning to launch a new web site, too. I have a really good feeling about this project and about the coming year. I plan to be back in the states at some point in the Summer or Fall and I plan on doing a few shows. Stay tuned for more...

Shows and More Shows

It's shaping up to be a pretty busy season, musically. I did a show on the 6th with the band and we managed a pretty favorable review out of it. Great turn out and just a really fun night all the way around. Thanks for coming out and supporting us at The Melting Pot (Underground Style), Hong Kong! Here's an excerpt of the review from konghongrock.blogspot.com:

... As soon as these guys stepped into The Melting Pot, they oozed confidence and as we would eventually learn, this was not at all misplaced. Jeff Caylor's band consists of himself as the lead singer and pianist, an acoustic guitarist who helps out with the harmonies, a bassist and a drummer. After a quick set up and introduction from Chris B, Caylor counted in the band to their 6 song attention grabbing set... It's also good music. It gets the feet tapping before the head realises it, and usually the songs themselves are tales of interesting events or emotions.

Read the full review here. By the way, for a bit more Hong Kong press, go wwwwaaayyyy down to the bottom of this page.

I'm opening for some very talented ladies from down under next Friday, December 19th at a show in Quarry Bay at the Island ECC Gallery (633 King's Road, 2/F). I'll do about 3 or 4 songs solo at about 8pm, and then enjoy the rest of the night listening to them. Their names are Deb Fung and Alarice. Check them out.

I'll be taking a short holiday to Sydney and then back to Hong Kong for a couple more dates in January. See the gigs page for all the details. I'm going to try to do another live web cast on January 15th. That will be a solo set, as well.

Thanks for all the support, people. If you're on Facebook, be sure to fan my artist page!

All I Want for Christmas...

It's a bit presumptuous to think that someone who reads my blog would get me a gift this Christmas. Optimistic, yet presumptuous. Anyway, the point is, that I really don't want anything for myself (except for that Tea, mom. Please go ahead and send me the Celestial Seasonings Throat Soothers Tea).

If you have to spend some money, please spend it on someone who needs it a lot more than me. My favorite organization at the moment is the Dalit Freedom Network. DFN is about helping provide basic necessities and opportunities for people on the lowest rung of the Hindu Caste system in India-the Dalits (AKA the Untouchables).

You can give money to start a bicycle rickshaw business for a Dalit or you can just make a donation and let them spend the money where there's the greatest need. See the catalog here.

In the meantime, check out this video.

Make a difference this year. Somewhere.

RTHK Morning Brew and Pizza Corn

I was walking down the street yesterday and when I passed Pizza Hut I suddenly remembered what I need to tell people when they ask me what surprises me about living in Hong Kong.

Pizza corn.

Corn is a common pizza topping and it comes standard on personal pizzas at Pizza Hut. It's surprising and sometimes disappointing. Didn't corn come from the Native Americans? And didn't pizza come from Italy? How do these two come together in Hong Kong? I'm thinking about this today. Unfortunately, I wasn't thinking about it during my Radio Television Hong Kong Morning Brew radio interview with Phil Whelan yesterday. Instead, when asked what surprises me about Hong Kong, I said something generic and very forgettable.

But the rest of the interview was pretty fun. Phil Whelan was a gentleman and a complete pro. We talked for a good while and he generously played three of my songs on the air. I had a great time. You can click the link below to check it out, where I've edited out the songs for your convenience.

I recorded a track a couple years back with a friend I've never met. I know. I have a habit of doing that. Shane Sanders and I collaborated on this song via the web and I rather like it. He just posted this updated mix, so I thought I'd take the opportunity and make it available here. Hope you enjoy it!

Live at the Fringe Club

I'm finally doing some of my music live again on November 14th. This time, I'll have a different band, but all amazing musicians. Tim LaTour is on guitar, Daniel Son is playing the bass and Jon Lee will be hitting things. The set will be about 45 minutes and we're doing a mix of new songs and stuff from Okay.

The venue is The Fringe Club in Central Hong Kong. You can get tickets in advance for $100HK, or you can buy them at the door for $125. The price includes one drink, so it's an amazing deal. Also, the other band, Matchbox, is fairly well known around here, and we've both got an acoustic vibe going, so it should be fun. Feel free to check their web site, which is in Chinese. Here they are on Youtube.

Even if you're across the ocean from Hong Kong, be sure to catch the live stream online via Ustream.tv.

I Don't Know Everything: The Zipper Merge

I am realizing that I don't know everything.

For years, probably since I've been driving, I've assumed that the correct way to approach a lane-closed merge is to move over as quickly as possible to avoid a bottleneck at the actual merge point. Then I saw a news report on television about something called a "zipper merge."

It caught my attention because I always got ticked when people try to wait until the last second to merge into the "main lane." Apparently, folks like me have been mucking up the system, as it's supposed to work. You AREN'T supposed to merge early, but you actually should change lanes at the point of the merge.

So, to all the people I've given dirty looks and created a rolling roadblock for, I'm sorry. I was wrong.

If you check ask.metafilter.com, I think Jacquilynne puts it best in this quote:

Assume the lines each have one hundred cars in them. If you shuffle merge at the last point, everything is even.

But you, being the eager beaver that you are, moved over somewhere a mile before that point. Now line 1 has 101 cars in it, and line 2 has only 99. Because you've been in the line for awhile, when you get to the front, you have to let someone from line 2 shuffle merge in front of you, meaning that two cars got over from 1 to 2 in the space where only one should have. Plus, though, the guy who let you in now has to let another person in. That's three! Three cars where only one would otherwise have merged.

It doesn't take a lot of early movers before lane 2 is emptying out faster than water bucket at the OK corral.

I've never heard anyone else give an argument FOR the zipper merge before this TV show. Where do people actually learn this? Was I asleep during that lesson of Driver's Ed?
