Louise Arbour, the U.N.'s High Commissioner for Human Rights and onetime chief prosecutor in the Yugoslav and Rwandan tribunals, discusses U.S. policy on detainees in the fight against terrorism....
"I think the events of Sept 11 have launched a set of counter terrorism initiatives that have provoked a real erosion of norms and international standards that have been well established under the Geneva conventions. I am very concerned with efforts to screen away or carve out a series of actions that are not subject to judicial scrutiny. I think democratic governments work when you have a real balance between the role of the executive, the legislative, and the judicial branch. I am always very wary of activities that take place where deliberately the executive tries to shelter its activities from judicial oversight."
Hmmm...score another one for the Bush administration's leadership in the free world!
