The Powell Effect

Late last week we heard that Colin Powell would be making an endorsement of a candidate. Well, you could not have paid me to believe that he would endorse Obama. Because, you have to remember, this is a man that was commodore and chief for Daddy Bush, and was Sectary of State for Son Bush. He is, to my knowledge, a life long Republican. You must understand my surprise when I heard Powell say that he was endorsing O.

At first I thought he was crazy, and even now, I am still trying to understand what it all means. because we are talking about a man that could have run himself, and be standing on the other side of the card. There were times that Powell's name was being thrown around as a candidate, but I do believe that he wants nothing to do with the White House.

Now, the question is does this help Obama? In a way I think that it does, it might work well with Veterans, but when it comes down to it, I don't think it matters much. Powell, is a man that is loved my the other side, but has been for years looked at as a 'Uncle Tom," amongst Blacks. His endorsement carries wait, but not enough to get Obama over that hump.

Not to mention, I don't think Obama needed his endorsement anyway. Obama still has to win over Blue Colar whites, and trust me that is going to be hard. Obama is having trouble with the "Joe Plumbers,'s of the world, which by no struck of luck are white. It does not matter to them that a man that is of a mixed family endorses a man that is of a mixed family.

I believe that Obama is thankful of this, but the game is not over.

Now if Obama could get Colin Powell to go on the stump with him then that might make a difference. But, we all know that, that will never happen. Powell does not bring any votes to the table in the key states that Obama must win. Obama is facing people that are challenging if he is American enough, now we all know that this being asked because of his color. No matter what they are saying, color is a matter of importance in this race.

As Blacks we must realize that if Obama wins, the future of our struggles in this country will forever be different. There are a lot of things, I think we can not blame on the "man," anymore. Let me get more clear. It is time let go of the held down mentality. It is time to stand up for our on mistakes and stop blaming the Government. Obama, is not going to be President for us, he is going to be President for the nation.

His focus is on the nation not on whether or not we "blacks" are advanced, that is the responsibility of us alone. Our communities need to be changed not by the Government but by ourselves, standing up to make the changes necessary. I do not want Obama worried whether or not we like him or not, I want him to worry about keeping us safe, and helping spread the wealth.

Obama's win means nothing unless we as a culture can keep producing more Obama's, not just for politics but in other areas than sports. There are many blacks doing well in other areas than sports, but we do not learn of them, now is the time to learn of them. Now is the time to seek them out, and start helping our children model themselves after other great blacks, and now we can add another name to the list, After Dr. King, and others, we now need to add Obama, and start pattering ourselves after him. Because he is the future, a fulfilment of King's dream. The torch has been passed to a new bread of Americans, as Kennedy put it, now lets move forward as one nation.
