Joaquín Cortés was born into a gypsy family in Cordoba, Spain. At the age of twelve he moved to Madrid and started his dancing studies. Three years later he joined the Spanish National Ballet and was soon was promoted to soloist. With the Spanish National Ballet, he traveled around the world, performing in theatres such as the New York's Metropolitan Opera House and the Congress Kremlin Palace in Moscow.

In 1992, he created his own company Joaquín Cortés Ballet Flamenco. He premiered his first show called Cibayí (a romaní word of the gypsy language that means beautiful), which was considered a masterpiece by most of the flamenco traditional artists. Cibayí was the first piece to illustrate Cortés unique approach to dance full of effect and spectacle, while never ignoring the detail and effect of simple, singular beauty.

His second show, Gypsy Passion, opened in 1995 at the Albéniz Theatre in Madrid, where it became an instant hit and was seen by more than a million people. The subsequent Gypsy Passion tour lasted four years and played more than thirty countries in five continents.

Cortés third show, Live, premiered in March 2001 in Barcelona to similar critical and popular acclaim. Live toured internationally from 2002-2004, including a celebrated engagement at New York's City Center in September 2004.

His next show, De Amor y Odio (Of Love and Hate), premiered in Milan in March 2004. This production successfully toured throughout Europe and Asia throughout that year.

His most recent creation, Mi Soledad, premiered in Mexico City in May 2005, and has since been performed to critical acclaim in many of the world's capital cities.
