STOP WHAT YOU'RE DOING AND LOOK!
This is the the world of Johnny Stranger.
Let it be known, he is more than just one man. Indeed, Johnny Stranger is a trio of like-minded musicians. The band began in December of 2005, comprised of Chad Montermini on drums, Peter Ewen on vocals and guitar, and Josh Hoglan on bass.
Johnny Stranger’s unique beginning epitomizes the band’s discipline, devotion, and drive. By first recording a full-length studio album in vocalist Peter Ewen’s home studio, Magic Bean Studios, the band took time to explore their sound and grow their musical vision. Before ever playing a live show, Johnny Stranger had sold 200 albums and had nearly 1,000 fans on MySpace.com.
On August 26th, 2006, Johnny Stranger made their first live appearance at The Vault in Olympia, WA. With an attendance exceeding 150, the band proved to have a promising future. Johnny Stranger has continued to generate a widespread buzz in the Northwest.
The Johnny Stranger soundscape epitomizes originality. Whereas many of their contemporaries fall in line with the ‘Emo’ movement, Johnny Stranger utilizes the classic blueprints of silky-smooth swing and raw rock ‘n’ roll. From epic anthems and bombastic, frantic rock ala The Mars Volta, to soulful ballads and funky jams like the Chili Peppers—Johnny Stranger breathes new life into the dormant entity that is rock.
The band’s fresh, organic sound also radiates a calculated, more thoughtful approach, influenced by higher education in music. Frontman Ewen graduated from Evergreen State College with a BA in Ethnomusicology. Bassist Josh Hoglan currently attends Eastern Washington University for Music Education. At the prestigious Berklee College of Music, drummer Chad Montermini studies with Mike Mangini (Steve Vai, Frank Zappa), and studio-great Larry Finn.
Their sophomore album, Lucid, is to be self-released this July, supported by a West-Coast summer tour. Look out for Johnny Stranger in 2007, they will rock… funk… wait, no…
Yes, they will rock your world.
