Regina Spektor and the Prosperity Gospel

Regina Spektor can sing, and as it turns out - she has a pretty good grasp of the ridiculousness of the prosperity gospel that is present (overtly or covertly) in so many churches.

"God can be funny,
When told he’ll give you money if you just pray the right way
And when presented like a genie who does magic like Houdini
Or grants wishes like Jiminy Cricket and Santa Claus
God can be so hilarious
Ha ha
Ha ha"

From her single "Laughing With" on her new Album "Far" available here for only $5:

RE:align Part3

Dallas Bible Church Youth Ministry: Jan Kay High School Retreat

All other commands flow from the chief command (Matthew 22:34-40). The Gospel affects how we love our neighbor. Our neighbor is anybody we come across. (Luke 10:25-37)

RE:align Part 2

Dallas Bible Church Youth Ministry: Jan Kay High School Retreat

The chief command is to Love the Lord our God (Deuteronomy 6, Luke 10:25-28, Mark 12:28-30)The chief problem in the Universe is Sin (Genesis 3, Romans 1:18-25). The person and work of Jesus Christ is the only answer to that problem (Colossians 1:15-23).

Paper: God's will and sin

Hey guys-

I wanted to share a paper I wrote over the summer for a couple of reasons:

1. Learning more about the Sovereignty of God and Sin was one of the more awe-inspiring and theologically forming topics I've studied so far
2. I'd love to start a dialog about the topic
3. I'd love to hear more about the subject (recommended readings/sermons, disagreements, etc)

It's not that long, and I'd love to hear any feedback.

Thanks!

Martin Luther: humility, beer and a right view of the Word of God

This morning I was reading a biography on Martin Luther and came across this quote:

When describing his role in (what we now refer to as) the Protestant Reformation, Luther said:

"I simply taught, preached, and wrote God’s Word; otherwise I did nothing.  And while I slept or drank Wittenberg beer with my friends Philip and Amsdorf, the Word so greatly weakened the papacy that no prince or emperor ever inflicted such losses upon it.  I did nothing; the Word did everything."

Without reading the rest of the biography, you might be tempted to think that Luther put little effort into his work.

That was not the case.

I am continually blown away with the amount of work/research/effort/danger Luther surrounded himself with when preparing sermons, writings, translating the NT into German, etc.

But he recognized Who and What was truly making things happen.

I am taking this as a reminder that we should work hard to teach, preach, write and converse about God - all the while knowing, depending and celebrating the fact that it is God who moves souls, not us.

And, I'm glad Martin Luther enjoyed his beer ... because I do too.

Mobile Me? More like Mobile G, or Mobile Free...

I love the idea of all my contacts, calendars, email and important documents being synced between my computer and my phone, as well as being saved online to access from anywhere. I also love the idea of all of those being synced wirelessly, without having to ever plug in and hit "Sync". But I don't love the idea of paying $99/year for that.

I want to pay $0 for it. Thanks to Google and Dropbox, I can!

Here is a quick rundown of my setup, in just two links:

1. Google Sync

Wireless PUSH syncing of my contacts, calendars and mail.

(I previously had a very organized Apple Address Book. Using a simple, free app called A to G I was able to export those contacts into my GMail contacts.)

2. Dropbox

2GB of free document storage and syncing between my computer, phone (free iPhone app) and online access to boot!

That's it! Both services have very robust documentation, so you should be able to find an answer to any question you have. If not, leave a comment and I'll see what I can do!

How I go to class online

Towards the beginning of this summer, I began taking classes through Reformed Theological Seminary. I am working towards a M.A. in Religion. Since I am in Dallas, and RTS does not have campuses near here I opted to take distance classes from the Charlotte campus. When I first started the class I would print out class outlines and handwrite notes, but I wanted something a bit more permanent and searchable. Our lectures are delivered as mp3’s, and we are given one huge PDF of class outlines for the course, so with the right combination of iTunes, Spaces, Logos and Skim I think I have found the best setup for my situation. Have other ideas? I’d love to hear them!
