I think I'm not the only one if my mail.app (mac email application) keeps crashing for no reason right after it starts.

It can happen when your todo's in ical are corrupt. But if you don't use todo's in mail, there isn't a clear fix yet, unless you want to delete your preferences, every week (!).

As you can see, it's just an email link. Mail.app will start again. Not permanently though. In a few weeks you have to click on a link with a mailto: tag in it again.
