Web Trend as Map - ohhh... I love maps

Information Architects Japan Map Thanks to almost colleague Marshall for the link to the Information Architects Web Trend map. For those of you who dig Tufte or any ordering of information, you will totally recognize the transportation style map. For the rest of you who wonder what we do on the web all day, this gives an idea in the great popularity contest. For myself, I just want a big honkin' copy to hang next to my desk. Yummm. But, I especially like the clickable version online.

Russian style

Well, it's some really odd time of the morning and I can't sleep. My body is little strung out and jazzed from a half day class of slingin' Russian kettlebells. ????? Yeah, you read that. Russian Kettlebells. These things are wicked and awesome. I have totally rocked my body today with little or no back injury. Go ahead, look up Kettlebells. You know you want to. I spent my day down in League City at a smacky club which you can read about at Houston Kettlebell club.

So I am sure I will be doing this again. I have some interesting bruises on my forearms that I may have to explain. But, my body is still kind of on a metabolism high and I can't really sleep. Interesting side effect. The workout was demanding, but the attention by instructors was nearly one-on-one. No risk of real injury here. Everyone went at their own pace, as long as you weren't wimping out and just whining. We didn't have any whiners, but I don't think they would have shown up in the first place. It was a fantastic day and I have a new tool in the workout and back rehab arsenal. Awesome!

Today may indicate new directions. More of a parallel path that I started down several years ago, but maybe just off to the side or next to the previous track. Not sure, but definitely going in the same direction.

jet lag makes me hungry

I have had a fairly easy time adjusting to the return to the North American Continent. Previous trips have left me disoriented or unbalanced for a few days. It has been two days and I feel my feet back under me already. However, food now seems to control my every move. A healthy and balanced nutritional plan went out the window with the trip to Spain and Morocco. Trying to return to a physically supportive western diet has left me wanting in many ways.

Where are the late nights of heavy meals accompanied by wine, bread, cheese and an even later paseo through the plazas? The rich Moroccan pastries of phyllo type dough with almonds, honey and sticky sweet goodness? Tofu chicken just doesn't seem as filling or pleasant anymore. I tried, a trip to Whole Foods last night to restock my refrigerator with healthy snacks, but my internal clock seems to think that I should be eating a hefty dinner about 3pm. About the time I am writing this. I have resorted to writing about food so that I won't miss the wonderful dates, lamb, serrano ham and other goodies that we lived on for the past several weeks. I know I will cave, I already have plans for a "quick" trip to the Phoenica grocery store on the west side of town this weekend. I am sure my meager attempts to recreate North African delicacies will be lacking, but I can not resist the urge to relive those intense flavors and aromas.

How do you plan a trip when you can't speak the language?

Today I am browsing the web soaking in all the info I can on Morocco. I have the chance to travel to Spain in May of 2007 and realize that Morocco is a place I have always wanted to visit. We have narrowed it down to most likely Rabat, the capital of Morocco. This is on the coast, but less touristy than say Fez or Tangiers or especially Marrakech.

I have already placed an order for a Moleskine notebook or two, and think I might even splurge on a new digital camera. Most of all, I look forward to the sleepy quiet of this cultural haven that beckons me. Walking through the souk and having tea in the courtyard of a Riyahd seems so far away from the keyboard where I now sit. Amazing that the technology I use everyday can facillitate the vacation that will take me back in time and also forward in my own personal journey.
